ok, i ordered a superchips tuner for my 02 4.7 QC! i guess it just came out! and it was supposed to arrive today, but ups has issues reading the address label! grrrr!!! so the delivery was rescheduled for tomorrow! so tomorrow i will post the results and let you guys know if it was worth the $280 plus shipping!

ok, got the tuner in last night! and put it on the 87 octane setting on the way down to the gas station! it was decent, most notable were the shift points, kinda kicks you in the a$$! i then changed it to the performance setting (needs a minimum of 91 octane to run correctly) after topping off with a tank of 91. and i would just like to say i am very pleased with my purchase and the results it gave me! but to answer your question, superchips just upgraded the tuner for the dodge gas trucks to accomodate for the 4.7 dodge and jeep engines, and it works great! it allows you to raise the speed limiter, and adjust for tire size, but it does not you raise the rev limiter, which in my experience isnt needed with the 4.7. i ordered it off line at tsetruckstuff.com they are based out of arkansas and im in california so it took a little while to get here, not to mention the guy got the address wrong and put loma linda instead of lake elsinore! anyway, i bought it right after christmas and they had a sale going on a lot of items, not sure if they still do, but no harm in checking right?? so if you are looking for a nice gain for around 300 bucks, i would say go with the superchips tuner!
2002 4.7L magnum, QC, silver, drop in oem K&N air filter, flowmaster 40 series (3" from cat-back), and newly added superchips tuner (performance setting)

You think it feels good, and if you had the death flash, it probably does.
But I didn't have the daeth flash, had some mods, and on 87 octane with 87 in the tank, it only made 4 more hp and 4more torque, after 3 grand.
I'm dynoig with 93 octane(Texas), and on that swetting soon. It's probably going back unless I see at least 20 hp gain. And with my minor mods, I doubt it will, I hope I'm suprised.

texas todd, the tuner is not going to make alot of power on 87 octane. the whole point of the tuner is to tune it to run on 93 octane and it advances the timing. if you run with 87 octane our knock sensors will hear pinging and back off the timing, thus taking you from a 15 hp gain to a 4 hp gain. try again with 91 or higher octane. let the chip do it's job.

jason the 4.7 doesn`t have knock sensors. Only the HO version does as far as I know. I`d like to be wrong on this one but I don`t think so.

I know Jason. I have to have a tank of premium to objectively test it. It'll be soon.
The whole purpose of this is to see if I return it or not. HOw much HP/tq is $305 worth to you? 6,8,? I'll find out the answer to that question for me soon. And do you want to burn premium for it all the time?

Standard 4.7 has 1 knock sensor, HO has dual knock sensors. Here's a site with the specs for each engine:

The only way it would be wrong is if somehow Dodge decided that they didn't want a knock sensor and Jeep decided that they did.

Besides the fact that the HO has the dual knock sensors, different wiring harness, different PCM, different engine. The HO has higher compression ratio, special exhaust valves, stronger valve springs, different heads, different block, forged crankshaft, special connecting rods and special main bearing. It's like Jeep was going to offer a supercharged, super high output version of the Grand Cherokee. You don't need all the fancy hardware for 30-35 hp and 35 lb/ft of torque. It's like they were designing an engine to handle in excess of 400 hp. Anyway, the dual knock sensors help to better detect knock since the sensors are mounted in the top of the block near each cylinder head. That way each sensor only needs to detect detonation in 4 cylinders and it's closer to each cylinder it's monitoring instead of a centrally located sensor having to monitor all 8 cylinders. if you're thinking of retrofitting this system to your standard 4.7 forget it. there's no place to mount another sensor. The HO has the dual sensor mounting bosses in the engine block. Besides, how do you know if your PCM will be able to handle dual knock sensor signals?

Rob C - I couldn't get anything to come up at the site you posted, where is info from ? Link doesn't look directly related to Daimler Chrysler; do you have any info on this from them ? I've seen comparisons between regular and 4.7 HO motor specs stating there is no knock sensor on the regular HO. I don't doubt that you saw that; but one of these spec comparisons must be wrong - I'd be most comfortable seeing info from DC to settle the confusion.

The following is an excerpt from the 04 service manual.
KNOCK SENSOR
DESCRIPTION
The 2 knock sensors are bolted into the cylinder
block under the intake manifold. The sensors are
used only with the 3.7L engine.
OPERATION
Two knock sensors are used on the 3.7L V-6
engine; one for each cylinder bank. When the knock sensor detects a knock in one of the cylinders on the corresponding bank, it sends an input signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). In response, the PCM retards ignition timing for all cylinders by a scheduled amount.
Knock sensors contain a piezoelectric material
which constantly vibrates and sends an input voltage (signal) to the PCM while the engine operates. As the intensity of the crystal’s vibration increases, the knock sensor output voltage also increases.

If I get time I'll do some more research. I know I've seen the reference to 1 knock sensor in the standard and 2 in the HO at several different sites but, I can't remember if any of them were official DMC sites or not.

Fubar's post settles the confusion - from service manual - only 3.7 has knock sensors (service manual for year before 4.7 HO becomes available for Dodge). Bad info can spread ilke wildfire.

Not sure if the service manual fubar referred to is the factory one, so I just checked a 2002 factory service manual ('02 would be before 3.7 and 4.7 HO were available in a Dodge) - there is no mention of a knock sensor (checked detonation sensor too, nothing). I don't believe there is a knock sensor on the regular 4.7. If there is it would have to be the newest ones and not relevant to this post about the tuner.
Guys - you don't want to rely on this to protect your motor from detonation; you don't have it.

Just a follow up on the knock sensor thing. I have a 2000 4.7 and the wierd thing is it has 2 knock sensors (one on each bank of cyls) bolted to a coil pack. Neither one is electrically connected and there is no harness for them. I have the factory service manual and it does not list them.
Could they have installed they for a different application and not connected them in the Dakota?

Are you talking about the little coil packs we have on top of our spark plugs (8 coil packs total)?
It's too dark to go look under my hood right now.
But I'm sure all of my coil packs were identical.
