 Subject: 2003 4x4 front end

Just looked at my cousin's 2003 4x4 front diff. that broke out. The housing broke at the top leaving at round peice attached to the front mount and the drivers side axle wrung off. He atates that his trans. light came on and it felt as if the engine was in a strain he then heard a loud thump.There is no sign of him hitting anthing, the cover has only a scratch at the top.
Any one heard of this happening before the dealer says it came from abuse but he's not hard on his truck barely a scratch on it.
Any help would most heplful
