Message: Doesn't that make you mad that the new Rangers and Frontiers have V6 engines with more hp than the regular 4.7L V8. The 4.7L still has a little bit more torque, but that makes me mad about the hp.

Message: Nope... dosen't make me mad because I know that my 4.7L, makes its power over a WIDER rpm range.... those other engines probably make their rated HP, in a little 300-500rpm range... I'm going to have to do a little more research on this, but thats my educated guess (about the other engines)
Dan MOPAR=More Power!! 00 CC Sport Plus 4.7L 4X4 Auto, 3:55 LSD Flowmaster orig. 40 series (2 chamber) muffler, adjusted tps to .76V, ported TB, home brew intake setup w/K&N filter, more mods to come!!!

Message: I test drove a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder (for the wife)this weekend 270hp v6 about 30 more than my Dak. Let me tell you it was sad. I pull a boat and need the power. The only reason I tested it with the v6 is because of the high hp. I would not have put my boat behind that phucking thing to pull it more than a couple of blocks. It could not have done what the dak could do. that tells you somthing about the v6's might have more hp's and torque but it's not avialible where and when you need it. Ended up going with, of course the 05 Hemi Durango!

Message: btomcik - you might want to listen to these guys, they're right on all counts. I find it more annoying that some people buy into that nonsense that a smaller, peakier motor might actually be more powerful just because they posted a decent peak #. Look at the area under the curve for the real story !

Message: yeah, well i sure wouldn't mind if my motor didn't start falling asleep at 4500 rpms either. dakota could use a better breathing engine. what is the weak link in our horsepower equation?

Message: a .432 lift at the valve don,t do anything for upper RPMs,
you need a set of 1.7s rockers if you have 1.6s
or a cam change, but you,ll loss bottom end torque or it will move up the power band

Message: jasonsdakota - what motor are you and vern talking about, the 5.2 ? The 4.7 we were discussing here is still building hp at 4500 and still has a respectable 280 lb-ft of torque, gradually dropping to about 240 lb-ft around 5500 rpm. Maybe you just don't have the motor you want in a Dak ?

Message: They are all correct about the "usable" power. A broader lower hp powerband feels stronger then a peaky high hp powerband.
Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races and pulls trailers.
I would take a broad 235hp powerband (power between 2,000rpm and 4,500rpm) over a peaky 280hp power band (power between 3,000rpm and 4,000rpm) anyday.

Message: Seems that them imports sometimes rate them engines in BHP vs. NET HP like Domestic's do.
That's like revving to peak HP and dropping the clutch! And our rating is at the wheels. Their 270 is probably peak flywheel HP.
I remember my friend who bought another Frontier was excited some of them were getting more HP.
Wait till they try to pull a damn trailer like mine. No f'ing way!
