Subject: Anyone had syncros go out on 5 speed? IP: Logged
Message: Took my truck into dodge the other day. It is having idle problems....they could't find the probelm because the check engine light was not on, but still charged me $86 for their time. I just replaced the IAC and that did not solve the problem.
Anyhow as I left the driveway, I noticed that shifting into second caused some grinding. Since then anytime I downshift or up shift it will grind. If I shift at a low rpm it is not so bad though. But second gear is my traffic gear so I would really like to not screw it up but grinding it. Dodge told me it is the syncros because it only does it in second gear. But considering they couldn't find the idle problem, I am doubting their prognosis. What do you all think? Lastly, anyone know of a good tranny place in Southern California? Dodge quoted $1200 but it could be more they said.

Message: Ok I read some past threads it looks like dodge could be right about the problem. Just need a good place to have fix it, or replace it. Any suggestions?

Message: My dad's '95 CC V6 4x4 5-speed had the 2nd synchro grind sometimes. He wound up taking the tranny apart and replacing the synchro himself. Shifts real good now.

Message: Maybe Dodge put a ball joint in the tranny.

Message: After I got KaleCo's (www.kalecoauto.com) heavy duty clutch belt, I don't have this problem any more.

Message: For 1200 bucks, I would look into getting a rebuilt transmission (such as the one below). I don't have any personal experiance with them, but for 900 bucks every wearable part is replaced and it comes with a 12 month warrenty. It could be worth a try.
