Message: Jerry, what parts of AZ do you live in?
I used to live in Payson. Now in the West Valley.
Wondered what hills you pulling (Flagstaff/the Rim/Yuma, etc).
Similar trucks we have. I've been fine on the temps as long as I remember to put my clutch fan on. Otherwise I drive my truck with just the electric.

Message: Are you stating that you have a 4.7 V8 and a 44RE tranny, not the 45RFE? That would be interesting...

Message: My 2000 4.7 has been used to tow all kinds of stuff. When I lived in the mountains I drove a road called the Lion's Trail (9 1/2 miles and very steep and windy) and hauled hay with it. I hauled as much as 35 bails on the trailer and ten in the bed plus the weight of the trailer. 125 lbs per bail and 1000 lbs for the trailer and you've got 6000 lbs. I always took it real easy but it always did real well. I also haul a WWII jeep and all the accoutrements associated with it. I've hauled it all over the western US to shows and outings with no problem. That is roughly 5000 lbs. I once hauled the jeep, camping hunting gear for a week for three buddies and three bull elk and in the bed a 1/4 ton jeep trailer. That I hauled from Colorado to California. I don't know how much that weighed but it was the biggest load I'd carried and I vowed to never do it again. These little trucks don't handle too well with that kind of weight in and behind them.

Message: Earl, I say you would be fine remembering to take it easy. Brakes are a big drawback so use the trailer "E" brakes and all will be well in the kingdom.

Message: I think that with the weight of the trailer/bronco you would be pushing your luck... IMO. I dont know that stretch of road very well...It might make it, but at what expense?

Message: Yes I have a "stock" tow package I think it's a class III or IV i'm not for sure with trailer brakes and the 7 pin harness (if that stuff matters or not) but I found out the bronco weighs between 6,000 and 7,000 pounds depending on the extras and engine size I don't think it would be done with a flatbed carhaller under that?? what do ya think??

Message: One of the most important parts of the tow package is the tranny cooler. Most car haulers are around 2000 lbs or less, and usually rated 7000 total. If your original guess of 5000 is right, you'd be over what is recomended but likely still ok; as long as you use trailer brakes and load properly (good tongue weight). How did you "find out" the heavier guess ? If it were me, I'd load it onto my 7000 lb rated flatbed, and go for it if the tires didn't look overloaded. If it really is 6-7000, a trailer that would haul that would make the load too heavy.

Message: The dealership asked for my vin number and told me the bronco weighed between 6 and 7000 according to vin but that was a rough guess the guy told me and the car hauler is used to haul one of our contractors backhoe so I know it weighs alot to be able to handle that ok new question how hard to a tranny cooler to install or is it one of those things you take to someone else?? what kind do you reccommend?? thanks shorty

Message: I have an '04 4.7L V8 QC with full-time 4WD. I did not intend to use it as a tow vehicle but as our camping partners all bought trailers, so did we. I have the 3.55 rear. Fortunately, the truck came with the tow package including tranny inter-cooler and class IV receiver/plug. Since we pull around 7,000 lbs in trailer weight with gear and passengers, I wanted to maximize my truck's towing safety and potential. I installed a K&N cold air intake, 3" stainless exhasust (Magnaflow for sound), programmer to switch between performance and tow modes running 91 octane, tranny temp gauge for peace of mind, rear air bags, E-rated 10-ply 35" Toyo tires, weight distribution hitch, increased trailer tire size to carry more weight safely, and installed trailer brake controller. I have never come close to overheating, even when pushing too hard up long hills and experiencing the gears popping into first (the point when I stop trying to keep up with my diesel friends up front and relax into a 45 MPH pull). HOWEVER, I did have to have my manifold resurfaced and attached with non-OEM bolts following an exhaust leak...lesson learned to tow relaxed, although chat rooms suggest it is common for such a leak to occur on similar trucks regardless. My only complaints are that existing after-market tow mirrors do not do the job and that gas mileage stinks. Looking to add better tow mirrors if found, and install custom second fuel tank in bed. By the way, I pull a 20' 2002 KZ Frontier witht a hard-shell queen that slides out the rear and 3 bunks up front. We'll be towing from N. Cal to Yellowstone, Rushmore, etc this coming Summer for a month-long trip with best friends. See ya on the road!

Message: I have the 2006 Dakota Laramie w/3.55 gear ratio & tow
package.
Pulling Travel trailer @3500lbs loaded.
I added KN Air intake and new 18" tires, same tire size that
came w/truck from dealer.
Prior to this I towed thru mountains with little to no trouble.
My first time out this year and the OD could not find gears,
and the engine heated up quickly.
I am going back to stock intake to see if this was an issue at
all.

Message: I have a 01 Dakota CC 4x4 with 3.55 gears and a manual 5 speed transmission. Bought a 22' Camper trailer (4150 lbs dry). I am hoping all will be okay with the towing (I do have the towing package with the 4.7L engine). Tires are 265/70/16. What do you think? I live in Alaska and have lots of mountains and winding roads. I will get a proportional trailer brake this week. Will this setup be adequate for my needs and safety? Mike in Wasilla.
