Subject: Warped brake rotors
IP: Logged

Message:
I've had to replace the rotors on my 03 dakota quad 3 times now at only 24,000 miles. Dodge knows they are using junk rotors and they continue to put them on. I contacted Dodge with my complaint, and they told me to try a different service dealer. At the advice of some owners, I filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Anyone who is experiencing this problem should do the same. We need Dodge to be accountable for the junk parts they are putting on their trucks. If enough people file complaints, something can be done.

Good luck, but "something" will most likely not be done about brake rotors. Search the internet and you will find that many manufacturers are having the same complaints about their rotors. This includes manufacturers such as Infinity and Lexus (I worked at a dealership that serviced both brands).

1. Put them in yer oven at 2500*F for 12 hours.
2. Take them out and dunk em in yer toilet to cool.
3. Replace with aftermarket rotors.

u people must mash on the brakes at every stop because my r/t has 22,000 miles on it and the pads have lots of meat left and the rotors look barely used. only thing i have is a click sound whenever i release the brake pedal but its coming from inside the cab it sounds like a switch or something

Are you sure the rotors are warped? Have you actually measured them?

I ask this because sometimes I get the feeling mine are warped a tad. Just a little bit of pulsation in the pedal. But I put a dial indicater on the rotors, and they are perfectly straight on all four surfaces. The surfaces looks good, and the pads still have plenty of material left.

The dealership just replaces the rotors for you because it is faster and easier than actually searching for the problem, and you are a happy guy when they are done. Maybe it's another problem????? I'm still searching for the cause in my truck.

Joey, It seems most(MOST)of us with the warping brake rotors have 4x4's. If I'm not mistaken the r/t only came with 2wd. For some reason Dodge decided to use the same front end parts for 2wd and 4x4 models. This is why you see most ball joint and rotor issues with the 4x4 models. The parts seem to be fine for 2wd's, but fail with the extra weight and use of 4x4 models.

RJ Starin, have the dealer check to make sure you don't have a dragging caliper. My rotors were replaced twice before I hit 25K miles and a few more times after 30K. My problem was partially due to the rear brakes. I think the '03 models have rear discs so I don't think you have the same issues. Also, make sure your wheels are torqued in sequence to 100 ft lbs usuing a torque wrench. It sounds silly, but with todays cheap rotors it DOES make a difference.

A common problem is brake pad transfer, where some of the material from the pads stick on the rotors - the sensation is the same as a warped rotor, but light braking can clean it up. I've experienced this on mine. Our stock brakes could be better; many have been pleased with the SSB upgrade. Planning your braking ahead and avoiding panic stops makes a big difference.

Don't let anyone near your wheels with an impact gun, it you have no other choice or if you’re not sure loosen your lugs and re-torque ASAP.
No guarantee warping won’t still happen but it does seem to slow it down.

Supposedly Dodge checked the calipers, said they were good. I know it's not my braking methods. I looked at the first set they took off, no visible warping. According to the dealer, they said warping occurs near the hub. I'll just have Dodge keep putting rotors on until they fix it. It's their money, not mine.

I would agree with Mike. My stock rotors were replaced at 55,000 with nobody using a impact gun, but with the new rotors being fine at 85,000 until I got new tires and the tire shop of course used an impact. Not much later warped rotors. Not only that but they ruined two chrome lugs (chrome sleeve came off). Some places impact them back on with way too much force.

Tell me what good is free flat repair, when they cause more damage than what the flat would cost you to plug it yourself?

So much for Dobbs.

maybe if these dakotas werent so delicate about everything we wouldnt have this problem. at work i use the impact gun on all the vechicles and they never get warped brakes except maybe the small cars so i use special torque sticks on those cars.

Torque sticks should be used on ALL light trucks and passenger vehicles when putting the wheels on. Sometimes you should worry about the guy who has a flat and has to change his tire by hand, in the rain or snow. When you tighten it down to 150lbs/ft, most people will not be able to remove them by hand.

I have too been a victim of the crappy rotors they put on these dakotas, and mine is not a 4X4, I dont drive crazy and managed to warp the rotors after only 30k mi. I got tiered of it and just changed my rotors to a set of cross drilled brembo rotors and I have had no problems what so ever and was pretty impressed by the braking. I would highly recommend to anyone who is getting the dealer run around to invest a little bit of cash in a pair of cross drilled rotors.

I had the same problem with mine. I had warped rotors and had them turned twice. That fixed it for a while then decided to get knew rotors becuause I found out the problem. Todays rotors are pretty thin and can warp easy that is why they come with metallic brake pads because they run cooler. If you ever changed the pads and did not use metallic pads then that is your problem. Regular pads will create alot of heat and will warp the rotors in a matter of days. When I changed the pads and rotors I found this problem. The person I bought my Jeep G.C. from did not use mettalic pads. I called them and asked him about it and he said he did not use metallic because they cost quite a bit more. Ever since no problems.

You won't believe this, but an old mechanic buddy of mine had an 89 Ram w/318 and still had his original rotors at 450K- always used soft pads, NOT metallic. I have a 91 w/318 and I use the aftermarket Chinese or Korean (whatever) rotors: $25 Canadian- can't beat them.

I have a 2000 CC 4x4 4.7 with 95k miles. about 45k ago I had the same problem with my rotors. Yes changing the pads will fix the problem, and yes the SSB's will help too. I went one step farther, I put slotted and cross-drilled rotors along with Carbon-Metallic pads. Over all it cost me about $230. I did install them myself, and in 45k miles I have had NO problems and the truck seems to stop faster. Just my 2 cents, but you never skimp on brakes or engine oil.

What is the torque spec for our lugs? Or
specifically for a 04 AWD?

I always take my own torque wrench with me to the
shop if I have to let someone else torque the
lugs. This has worked well with the Jetta and
Porsche, hopefully it will avoid warped rotors on
the Dakota as well.
