I own a 2001 Dakota with 44,XXX miles on it and the heater core went out. Isn't that a problem for vehicles with over 120,000 miles on it and not a relatively new vehicle? Has anybody had the same problem? Any suggestions?

Not an uncommom problem. Contact DC for possible warranty exception.

One thing you should know if you plan to replace the heater core yourself:
At the factory, the heater core is put on a fixture and the truck is constructed around it.
In other words - good luck!

Do a quick search and you will find a lot about the heater core. I have a 2000 4.7 4X4 with 60K miles that needed a heater core last month. It cost me $1200 to have the dealer do the work. After I read on this board how much work is involved (discharging the air, removing the dash, etc) I thought it would be better to let someone who has done it before take care of it for me. I did call DC to plead my case. They didn't care. Like I said if you do a quick search you will find some great detail on how to do it yourself if you are skilled enough, and how crappy the OEM heater core is. There's even one guy on this board on his 5th.

Take it to an shop that specializes in A/C repair.

They do heater cores all day long. Not only that, i asked them not to put the oem crap back in my 2000 Durango. They put in some superduty heater core back in mine. Should have seen the difference. The after market are much thicker and heavier. Not like the paper thin oem crap.

I own 98 dakoda and I have a problem with the heater. It will only blow warm air. I've checked the thermosat it's good. lots of air flow,it blows ice cold when I turn the thermo down and warm air only when I turn the thermo up.Is there something not letting the hot air into the system. The temp on the truck is normal.

Since this is the most recent post I'll use this to say a few words. I own a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7 motor and 4x4. It has 63000 miles on the odo.2 months ago the driveshaft fell off because of a bad u-joint. That was covered under warranty. 2 weeks later the crank sensor went out. Not covered . A week later the power steering pump starting whining. I was able to make it home from work. The next day I took it to the local Dodge dealer and waited for service to open. In the meantime the pump was really whinig so I kept the revs up real high till the thing seized up. DID IT EVER !!!!!! Ha Ha !! This was covered under warranty..I couldnt believe it.I almost crapped my pants....and yes I just had my upper ball joints replaced...after all this I still love this truck !
