Subject: Mud puddle, now truck stalls at idle IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 dakota with 5.2. I went through a good size mud puddle now my truckle idles out when I go to stop. It doesn't do it everytime though. But 5 times on the way to work today. I have read previous posts about the IAT plunger. What else could the problem be? Do you think I am better off taking it to dodge and have them tell me what the problem is; then decide if I am up for do it yourself job? Any other things you think it could be? Kinda scared to drive home in traffic tonight as when my truck turns off I have no steering and little brakes.

Message: After you went through this "puddle" did you:
Take it home and let it cool off?
Clean out the engine compartment?
Hose down alternator to get the gunk out?
Clean the battery?
Clean the drive belt(s)?
Check the air filter?
Here's a tip.
Wash it down real good. Dry it off. Then don't do that again.

Message: I only have checked the air filter. It has been raining a lot here and just have not felt the urge to stand out in the weather and wash my truck....but I did put a new air filter in after; as it was toast...

Message: I had a problem with water getting into my plug wires. The truck would stall at idle, but not while I was running. I don't know much about auto repair but it's an easy thing to check and an inexpensive thing to fix if it turns out to be the problem. There are different kinds of lube sprays that are hydrophobic in nature and will exclude water from where-ever you spray them.

Message: When you say water getting in the plug wires do you mean between the spark plug and the wire / the dist. cap and the wires? Would I just pull the wires out and dry the ends and plugs?

Message: Sorry I should have been more specific. The rubber coating on one of my plug wires had dry-rotted. Moisture would get into the wire through the crack whenever it rained. I got new plug wires and the problem was fixed. (I changed the spark plugs and distributor cap while I was at it.) You could check your plug wires to see if they have any cracks in them, and check if there is any water up in the spark plug housings (where the plug wires snap onto the end of the spark plug). I reckon while you're in there you could take the cap off the distributor and peek in. Maybe poke a lint-free towel around and see if it comes out wet?

Message: thanks, the plugs, wires, and cap/rotor I just changed last month. Cracking should not be an issue. But it is very possible by the amount of crap I had to clean out of my engine compartment that water got into the wrong places. I just changed my IAC yesterday. It helped but did not completely solve the problem. My truck still stalls out. I will check the plugs and dist. cap tommorrow. Hopefully that is the problem.
thanks for the advice NB
