Message: unfortunately i do not have the expertise to replace an engine and the truck is currently 50 miles away from home ($200 towing).
would going to a local shop to get a new engine cost significantly less? i get a 3 yr warrenty through the dealership.
this sucks!

select your vehicle, year, engine size and location. You'll be given a list of available engines with current mileage and prices. You can buy one of them and have almost any reputable garage install it for you if you lack the tools and expertise.

Message: well i checked http://www.car-part.com/
no '99 Dak (or newer) engines in Washington State. ARG!
there's one in Alaska though and a 2000 engine in Montana. i wonder if it worth it to have it shipped.

Message: Call around and see if the local scrap yards have any engines for your truck, car-part might not show everything available. If this doesn't work have an engine rebuilt at a local engine shop, probably going to run $1000-2000 for the rebuild, $1000-1500 to install and a couple hundred for a core since you block is dead. You could also try auto parts stores, they have sources for rebuilt engines.
I think your looking at $2000-3000 to have a rebuilt engine installed or $1500-2000 to have a used engine installed.
Good luck,,,

Message: well i found a place that can get an engine for $1100 and install it for $750. so a total of about 2 grand for a new engine installed.
does that sound right? or you think that's a little shady?

Message: Have you called you insurance company and told them what happened? Perhaps they will total out your truck due to the high cost.
The thing I find funny is that most people believe car insurance is for structural only and not mechanical. Of course, slight mechanical malfunctions are not covered but larger ones (like a blown block) often are.
That's my .02

Message: Although unrelated to a blown engine, I recently saw an insurance company pay us to find and extract a dead mouse that had a Chrysler Concorde stinking so bad you could not sit in it. On other occaisions, insurance companies have paid for replacement of wiring harnesses that have been chewed up by rodents and/or pets.

Message: $1100 for a used or rebuilt? Sounds good for rebuilt, but high for used, $750 for the install is probably just the labor. $2000 doesn't sound shady, but what are they doing for $2000. If I was having an engine installed I would have them replace all the parts that commonly wear out since they will be putting the old ones on the new engine anyway. Every time I replace an engine I always replace the waterpump, alternator, distributor cap wires and plugs, clutch and pressure plate if applicable, filters, belts hoses, etc, etc, anything that's questionable and hard to replace once the engine is installed. You might be spending another $500+ on parts, but the labor should be the same since it doesn't take any longer to bolt on a new part compared to a used part. Heck, it probably takes less time with new parts since they don't have to take the old part of your dead engine and clean it up.
I would find out what they replace during the engine swap and how much it's going to cost to replace all the stuff I listed. Your paying for the labor, why not have them use new parts.

Message: I think he would loose more by having the truck totalled out than paying to have the truck repaired. I recently totalled my 00 CC and lost about $6K on the deal. Paid 15K for the truck 2 1/2 years ago and only got $9000 from the insurance company, $5K for the lender and $4k for me. $9K was fair market value for the truck since I had 141K on the thing and I didn't argue the point since I knew they were right.
I doubt then insurance company would total the truck. The stealer wants $6500 for the engine, but the engine can be replaced $2000. I guess best case they might pay to have the engine replaced, but I wouldn't bank on this since it wasn't caused by an extrordinary event, stinky mouse dying in truck, rat gnawing through wiring harness, rock puncturing oil pan, meteorite smashing through hood of truck and engine. Most likely it was caused by low oil, clogged oil pump pickup screen or a defect in the rod from the factory.

Message: i just had the oil changed and checked it before driving that day so i'm pretty sure that it wasn't due to lack of lubrication.
i just talked with the 2nd shop and they said that the engine is salvageable. now i'm wondering whether to get a new used engine put in or stick with the existing one.
the water pump and alternator are brand new, just changed them. could go for new belts, plugs and wires though.
