Message: Not a ball joint question I don't think. I have gotten more free play in the wheel about 5+ degrees especially noticable on the hiway. I do mostly open hiway cruiseing/commuting.
Was told by dodge service these steering units are not direcrly adjustable, as is on the RAM apparantly.
Is there any remedy known, before I give up a day at the dealer to 'look at it'.
Thanks
George

Message: Tie rod ends? I would suspect the outers, but the inners can go bad also. If the inner tie rods are bad the dealer will tell you that they are not replacable and only come with the rack as a complete assembly, $1000 OUCH. The inners are available seperately, got my 00 CC inner tie rods from rockauto.com for around $50 each outers were about $40.

Message: Also, be sure and check for play in the steering column and related joints - between the steering wheel and the rack. There have been a number of posts here about that.

yes Ive notice the jostling kind of feel throughout the steering column too. I will make sure future inspection covers those details.

Message: My rack was replaced because it was leaking and the tierod ends were replaced because of play. At the same time the rack was replaced the steering shaft was replaced due to play.

| Fixed steering slop... IP: Logged
Message: I posted this a few days ago in the General discussion thread:
Hey fellers... thought I'd pass this along.
My steering had a ton of play, bout 1/4" deadspot in the middle and a noticable clunk when driving over uneven surfaces. Dealer claimed it was inner tie-rod ends, non-servicable... "1000 bux please".
screw that.
Replaced all 4 ball joints with Moogs, did not fix.
Finally got a new rack installed under independant extended warranty, at an independant shop a couple months back... didn't fix the problem. (idiot dealer diagnosis)
As a matter of fact the deadspot got worse after that. Turns out, the intermediate steering shaft had destroyed the input shaft of that new rack because of a sloppy fit.
So today, under warranty, we replaced that new rack (damaged after 4k miles), steering shaft and outer tie-rod ends.
Truck feels new again, even with 52k miles on all the bushings.
Word to the wise, replace that intermediate steering shaft FIRST (bout 100 bux) if you suspect a bad rack'n pinion.
