Subject: Torque Converted Trouble IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a 1999 Dakota. The dealer has already replaced my upper ball joints, replaced the transmission fluid, Took care of the Brake line recall, and adjusted the kick down cable. My problem that still remains is that after I've been driving it for about 45 minutes, the torque converted to go form Engaged, to disengage to engage. It takes about 1-2 seconds each time it does this, and in the process the RPM's jump about 150 rpm's. This happens around 60-65 MPH. I had a Dodge mechanic ride with me, but it wouldn't do it during the times he rode with me (Of Course). Anyone able to tell me what I should do, or how I can try to convince the dealer what to do before my 30 day warrantee runs out

Message: it sounds like it,s in the valve body [TCC]torque convertor clutch lock-up valve, because it does this after you have drivin it awhile,
if it was electrical i would think it would do this from the start.
this is just a guess/could be/maybe on my part,
try lightly pushing on the brake paddle when it does this again this should disengage the TC clutch while your foot is on the paddle[this should happen every time you push the brake] and let it lock-up when it,s off, this may tell you if the electric part is working or not

Message: my 99 had this exact problem. It is the TPS (throttle position sensor). Although mine checked ok, it was not. $25 bux at Advance auto for a GP Sorensen and it's perfect. I chased that problem around for quite a while! The best way to get it to "chuggle" for me was to set cruise control. The light throttle inputs confused it the most.

Message: Maybe the added weight of the service tech was enough that you had to 'step into it' just enough to get past the 'bad spot' on the sensor...
Just a thought. Maybe get the tech to drive by himself.

Message: I have the same problem. I tried the TPS and it didnt help me, but I have done alot of reading here and it did help alot of people. I would recomend it for the $25-30 it costs.
I had my transmission guy drive mine and he couldnt get it to do it either. He even drove it home one day (30 miles each way). If you come up with something else, let me know.

Message: Crow - for the hell of it, check the voltage on the new TPS and then follow the instructions to adjust it at speedtweaks.ca . See if it helps?

Message: Thank you for the info. I did print out everything and took it to the dealer. They took voltage readings up and down the scale and said there is nothing wrong wit it, but it still does the disengage/re-engage. The dealer also took it for a drive with a second so called machanic and they both said nothing wrong. I also started having the CHECK ENGINE light coming on. The 1st time I took it back, they told me it gave the code for the Oxygen Sensor, reset it and said they would have to change it if it came back on. It came back on and during their check out of the other problem they said they wouldn't replace it because it has an after market exhaust system on it causing it to give indications to the computer of running lean and I would have to live with it. I think they are giving me a line of bull. Can someone tell me what they think?

Message: I installed a new Cat, and a flowmaster catback. I get the same code as you. I know the rear o2 sensor is good, casue I just replaced it. I figured the front one could be bad, or the new cat wasnt working as good as the factory one (you can see right through it)

Message: The front O2 is the most important one. This tells the computer how your engine is tuned.
The second O2 is just to make sure that your cat is working properly. Heck, they even make a simm to fake out the computer for the downstream one. The one after the cat.
I replaced my front O2 at around 60k. No big deal, pretty darn easy. :)

Message: Yes, The previous owner put a new flowmaster on this from the Cat back. My question with that is will it work better if I start using Premium Gas. Back to the other problem, the Torque Converter doesn't the Lock/Unlock/Lock routine as much until I turn on the A/C. Noticed that on the Floor/Vent position the A/C runs even though it is not marked to do so. I'm just wondering if things turning off/on like the A/C might send enough of a spike in the system to trigger the sequence. Any thought on this?

Message: Thanks to all who replied. The problem I had with the torque Converter unlocking/locking/unlocking/locking was solved by replacing the Throttle Positioning Sensor. I guess the so called experts at a 4 Star dealer don't have a clue, Like I thought all along.

Message: I want to touch on an earlier post here...what is the relationship with the tourque converter and the brake system? I have a 2000 4.7 and I have a funny feeling that there's something going on between the two and it's been doing it for a while....

Message: When you put your foot on the brake the torque convertor unlocks. Then as you accelerate away the tranny stays unlocked untill it is told to lock again. Stops the engine from bogging down as you go around the corner.
