Message: I have ABS rear only 2001 Dakota 4x4. Anyone have info on brake pad upgrades or improvements ? 14k miles and intermittant rough / pulsing feel on medium hard brake application. Most times feels ok but still assesing the situation. Also seem to get lots of brake dust in engine compartment. Oh and could someone please castorate the one who designed the skid plate which makes changing oil a nightmare !

Message: I have the same truck. 01 cc 4wd 4.7 with skid plates. Yeah, some f***ed up engineer who never changed his own oil in his life designed the so-called skid plate with access hole. Well, until recently I removed the plate every time I changed the oil. Wasn't a really big deal but seemed so unnecessary. Last time, however, I put in one of the Fram replacement plugs that has a valve and cap. Remove the cap, screw on the hose with adapter, and the oil can be drained through the access without spilling a drop. Problem solved. The Fram kit is available at Wal Mart for about $11.00. Worth every penney. Now brakes, that's another story.

Message: I have been having the same problem with the brakes on my 2002 Dakota. It started just before 20k miles -- I brought it to the dealer and they said the rotors were warped, which wasn't covered under warranty. The pulsing when braking wasn't bad enough to pay for the repair myself. Now I realize that the pad is in constant contact with the rotor, which is what caused the rotor to overheat and warp in the first place. It also seems to have killed my gas mileage... I just got back from an 8k mile road trip and now the brakes are dangerously bad when applying heavy braking...
I feel like the warranty should cover this repair, since it isn't the rotor or the pad that caused the problem. Anyone else having this problem?

Message: I ahve the same system as Bill. I also have the same "problem". Sometimes it feels like the rotors are warped, but not always. I put a dial indicator on the rotors, and they are well within specs. So warped rotors are clearly not the problem. Mostly, I just ignore it.

Message: I also have the same pulsating brake problem.2002 quad cab4.7 4*4.I was going to get performance slotted rotors but you cannot cut them when they warp.plus at $100.00 per rotor, thats a little steep.I am going to try wagner or bendix rotor at $ 26.00 per rotor and a good set of ceramic pads.As for the pulsating some of the time?Mine does that to,I think it might be the transmission because sometimes the truck shakes forward at a light when I let off the brake.I dont know? Thanks !!

Message: If your rotors aren't warped, the problem is likely brake pad material transfer to the rotor. This seems to happen most commonly after heavy braking; light braking can clean it up and return normal brake feel.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: The original post mentioned the aggravation with the oil change. Here is what i do:
For the filter, I break it loose with a wrench, then i take a soda bottle with the top cut off and about 1-1/2" taller than the filter, stuff a paper towel in the bottom, put it over the filter and spin it off. Be careful to avoid the natural tendency to tip the filter while getting the whole thing through the hole in the pan. IT works great!

Message: the 01 and 02 daks have had their share of trouble with the calipers not receeding properly and causing drag on the rotors. I would push the dealer to help you with expense, at least meet you half way. Maybe you pay the part and they pay the labor or something. the rotors are $98 each and you would need new pads. but if the calipers caused the problem it would only get worse when the pistons are pushed back into the caliper to accomodate the new pads, unless the calipers are rebuilt. Call chrysler, they have had many with the same problem. Mine was a slightly different problem, but they made good with all the parts.... rotors, bearings (lots of heat pushed the grease out), hoses, seals, calipers, pads and fluid flush/replacement. So it is not unheard-of for them to do "warranty" on the brakes. Mine had 20,000 at the time and it showed the first time I went on a long trip traveling straight to fla from MA only stopping for fuel.

Message: brakes r pretty easy 2 change. First of all invest 20.00 in a Haynes or Chilton's manual for the truck - very good investment. Instructions to do work is pretty straight forward for the do it yourselfer. Good luck

Message: as a useful hint: I have read elsewhere and talked to some NASCAR mechanics who agreed that unequal torque on your lug nuts can lead to warped rotors. I torque my lugs to 115 ft lbs as per my Haynes manual.
The Haynes manual has some good pics for doing the rear drum brakes. (They are a pain! All those springs...)
Front brakes are disc and yes you will need a a large C-Clamp to push the piston back into the brake caliper. (See the Haynes manual. $17 well spent!)
