Just bought two dak's, my 2000 sounds like the rear is whining (axel bearings, gearing) it has 36000 miles on it. Is this common or do I have a problem?

Yes its common, and yes its a problem. Some people have solved it by simply changing the differential fluid (don't forget the friction modifier if you have a limited slip), but in my case, it didn't so the bearings are going to be replaced in a week or so. Try changing the fluid first, and if that doesnt solve it, then go and have it looked at.

Thanks for the info, I'll do just that! Thats probably what was wrong with my 95 Wrangler. It started at 115 K, but I traded it in on this dak and a 02 dak sport for the wife. Hers only has 8500 miles on it, so I'll be on the lookout
Thanks again.

Whats the procedure for that anyhow, I've never ever changed dif. fluid. Back yard mech for the last 30 years and I'm a dummy when it comes to this.

1. Pull spare tire if you want (it gives you a lot more room for working space).
2. Jack up the truck properly if you want
3. Put an oil catch pan underneath differential
4. Unbolt the 10 or 12 bolts (leaving the top one in a little is nice so it doesn't fall on you)
5. Pull off the diff. cover and let it drain for a while, whipe off the magnet on the bottem of diff. cover.
6. Scrape off the old RTV sealant from the cover and diff. housing.
7. Put new RTV sealant on the cover then put on the housing, then put the bolts back in (star pattern). Torque to 35ft lbs (I think thats the right torque).
8. Pull the filler cover and pour in friction modifier (if you have limited slip), then add differential fluid (I forgot how much you need).
9. Put filler cover back on and drive in a few figure 8's (if you have limited slip, to work the friction modifier into the clutches).
That should be it, hope this helps.

My 2000 dak says "axel corporate 9" and we also have a 02 Sport it also say's axel corporate 9 and also says axel anti spin differ. does this mean the 2000 is not a limited slip diff?
