Message: Well my oil pump failed causes the motor to knock so i thought this would be the perfect time to go to gut the computer and go carbed because i can get more hp by going this way.I need info on the 904 tranny a shop told me its basiclly the same as the 727 but not quite as strong but overall the same.I'm going to go stroked and forged to be able to run lots of nos if i get beat by mustanges eventhough it is going to be biult to tear them a new a$$...lol...and stroked to beat them and keep pulling hard. Its going to be 400+hp at the flywheel with a tilted rearend and a 3 point suspension. It will be for show but will be biult to race every now and then too.I have 4 15" with a custom console with tv and ps2...and know that i can still tell people that it will take there mustang...except svt's there a little faster.

Message: A 904 will never handle that much horsepower. While it is the same basic design as a 727, a 727 is much larger in diameter and so are all the components. This extra size also allows it to hold quite a bit more fluid keeping things cooler.

Message: ill have to go ahead and disagree with you on that one about the 904 not handeling that much power. i am currently building a 72 swinger with a highly modified 340 and a 904 trans. 2 of my friends race their 69 darts with 340's pushing over 600 hp and they only run 904 trannys. the 727 weighs more and you use 40 more hp to turn it than a 904. the torqueflites are the strongest trannys out there. i wish one came in my 99 r/t.

Message: 904 can be built to handle that much power, I wouldn't expect it to last too long stock behind a performance motor.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Yeah what Kowalski says.
Building one to hold up for 1/4 mile runs is one thing.
But using one for a daily driver truck is another.
For all you can hope to get from a 904, go 727.
I had a 904 in my 1/2 ton Ram years ago. I had to rebuild it more than once. Junk.
My friends Duster ate up his a few times until we swapped to a 727 which is still in that car 10 yrs later.

Message: It will be biult up to race and it seems to be alot easier to come by than the 727 tranny.

Message: There has got to be BUTT LOADS of 727 tranny's around.
In the 70's a sh*t load of motor homes were powered by 318's and 360's with 727 tranny's.
Of course they also used 400's 413's and 440's.
I wouldn't mind having a 413 in a small RWD car. Those engines can rip.
But serisouly, they used a sh*t load of 318's with 727's. Look in some junk yards. There has to be tons.

Message: I had a 72 roadrunner with a 318 in it, only put in a 4 bbl carb and a torquer manifold, the rest was stock. the stock 904 behind it was trash 6 miles after the engine mods, and in 6 months of street driving with a somewhat built brainless 727 I went through two of them. finally had to go with a fully race prepped tranny and that was on the way out after a year. Aint no way a 904 will stay in anything over 200 hp on the street.
