Subject: Grind / squeek in reverse IP: Logged
Message: I have about 540 miles on the 04 4.7 QC AWD now.
I did not try reverse until I had drived 450
miles home from the dealer and found an alarming
grinding / squeeking sound when backing up. It
has occured almost every time reverse has been
engaged since.
Any suggestions?

Message: It has been very cold each time the noise has
occurred. The brakes are new and perhaps not
fully bedded in. Do you really think this is
something that I should go to the dealer for?

Message: My '04 Quad did the same thing backing out of the driveway every morning when it was new. It eventually goes away. After 1 year and 18,000 miles, it only does it after a heavy rain. I don't let dealerships touch my truck unless absolutely necessary because you usually end up with more problems - like a wheel falling off. It's just the rear brakes squeaking and is not dangerous.

Message: Erasmus is right. Could be something simple like parking brakes not properly adjusted. Could something more serious. Use the warranty.

Message: Thanks guys, perhaps a little harsh though.
I have at least three years and 35,400 miles of
warranty remaining to catch any serious issues.
I do not think the brake noise when backing up
is any serious issue but was hoping that it was
common and someone could tell me what the cause
is.

Message: BruceWard
A brief grunt/grinding noise at the moment the brake is released or at the moment the vehicle stops, forward or reverse, is not uncommon and may not be harmful. Normal brake friction at some temperatures and humidity/moisture levels can cause the noise you describe. A routine brake inspection will assure you of the overall condition of your brakes and, typically, you should have your brakes inspected at each tire rotation interval or 6000 miles.
However, there are some noises similar to what you describe, that can be an indication of a failure. In any event, have a professional (or someone with some solid experience) perform an inspection and listen to the noise....dealership or otherwise.
