Subject: 02 5.9 R/T leaking... IP: Logged
Message: There is a leak that is coming from under the engine, I think its oil. The stain where the leak hits the ground is within arms reach when I crouch down. It has a slight brown color and feels greasy, so I'm almost positive its oil. What do you think could be the problem? Hopefully its nothing too major. I don't want to have to replace to whole engine.

Message: Well, we first need to figure out where the leak is coming from. Get it up on a set of ramps or jackstands and get under it. Look for the leak and try and trace it back to its source. It could be oil, transmission fluid or power steering fluid. Is the stain at the front or rear of the engine? Directly underneath? The auto pan often leaks, especially if the gasket and pan were not installed correctly. Seals can fail on the power steering pump as well. Valve covers may be leaking, allowing oil to gradually work its way down the engine.

Message: it seems near the front not too sure how deep the engine would be at where the spot is hitting the ground, but for sure its leaking from the center.

Message: Best thing to do is jack up that side of the truck and get under it to look. If you do not have any jackstands, run by your local wal mart, pepboys, etc. They frequently have package deals for a floor jack and stands for around $30-40 or so. Good investment if you plan on doing your own oil changes in the future. I bought a set at Kmart about 8 years ago, still holding up.
If it is at the front of the engine, it could be engine oil, power steering fluid or possibly tranny fluid. Take a look, then we can figure out where to go from there.

Message: Yep - red is going to be transmission fluid. Since it is at the front of the truck, I am betting it is the cooler lines. You have two lines that go into the bottom of the radiator. They are prone to leakage. Check that first. Mine did it constantly on my 92 until I finally pulled the connectors out of the radiator and replaced with some screw in adapter fittings I bought from Home Depot. Mine is a 92 though. I think the newer trucks had some sort of quick release type fitting instead. Anyway, take a look at it. While you are at it, check your tranny fluid level. If it had a problem shifting, you might be dangerously low.
