Message: well, ive reduced my problems down to a water pump. i had to have the radiator flushed to get all of the sludge out to find this but finally.
it seems like its leaking out of the shaft seal. so here are my 2 questions.
1) do i have to buy a new water pump or can i simple replace the shaft?
2) while iam at it should i just put in a new stat just for the hell of it, i may as well cuz i called the garage and was quoted 407 +tax to do both and i figured ild save 300+ and do it myself.
i just got the truck and havent worked on it yet, any tips to cut down on time w/theese installs? just tryin to save myself from headaches im used to little 4 bangers

Message: you might as well replace the t-stat when your at it. you have to do the whole waterpump. i dont think that they make just the shaft and seal. plus if you buy a new one, its warrantied if anything happens to it. what year dak do you have?

Message: Might as well do the thermostat, lots of guys here are going with a 180* therostat, keeps thing cooler. I just did my waterpump last spring, it only cost 50 bucks so you might as well replace the whole thing while you're there. FYI, I had a hell and half of a time getting the fan off. Might help to have a friend on hand to help, plus get a good helper bar, that thing's torqued on pretty good (plus either the dumbass that owned the truck before me or the factory used locktite on it!) Good Luck.

Message: I had the same problem getting the fan clutch off my 00 4.7 as it was locked on the shaft tighter than,,,, I found a good solution here, take a peice of plywood 2x24" and put a bolt (1/4" I think) through it to match up with a hole in the waterpumps pulley. Put this on the pulley and mark a cut line so the board wedges up against something like the frame, then cut the board to length. With the bolt through the pulley and the board wedged against the frame the pulley won't spin and you can get enough torque to bust the fan clutch bolt loose.

Message: I just replaced my water pump today..nice little job. The fan was hard to get off, i removed the bracket containing the alternator and AC compressor to make accessing the water pump easier also.
As for the fan, after asking the dealership what they do ..he said they simply place the wrench on the huge nut..then hit it with a hammer, impacting the nut loose. Short strong hits will loosen the nut without turning the pulley. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM. After hours of playing with it i had the fan off in 5 minutes.
The 2x4 idea would work too..but thats alot more work.
