Subject: 04 4.7 RPM Jump? IP: Logged
Message: 04 Dak 4.7 545RFE... I've had this problem since I got this truck but haven't worried about it much. But, it's bugging me now so I want to know what it is.
When I am sitting at a light, in a drive-thru, stop sign, whatever - sometimes the RPMs surge 200-400 and the truck leaps forward. I've learned to keep my foot on the brakes pretty good so it doesn't move. But, the first couple of times I almost rear-ended people in drive-thrus! Any ideas what would cause this bounce in RPMs? I've noticed it is worse if I get off the highway & sit at a light on the off-ramp.
Thoughts?

Message: Hey Robert. When you remember it's still under warranty, take it to a Dodge service facility and have them check it out. If you're not satisfied with them, take it to a Jeep service facility.
Jeeps use same enging/trans, so they have the same diagnostic tools, and sometimes better techs.

Message: Sounds a lot like the TPS problem that a few 4.7L engines have had.

Message: Maybe Idle Air Control?
Wife's Jeep (same engine & trans) used to do that until they reset the computer.

Message: Yeah, it's an auto. I drove my '03 5-speed Dak around for a year & hated that POS transmission. Feeling the need for a manual usually means you're trying to make up for something else... Unless you're towing or driving a sports car.

Message: Hey Autos?
Automatic transmissions are also for those of us who used to drive a stick, but can't now, because the left leg stayed behind when we came home from a battlefield.

Message: I've experienced the same problem for well over a year. Idle typically jumps from about 600RPM to 1000RPM. Sometimes the engine seems to bog down momentarily to around 450RPM then jumps back up to around 600-700RPM. I've had it checked by the Dodge dealer I bought it from; no problem found even though it was surging up and down between 600-1000RPM at the service center while they wrote up the paper work. The Service Manager said he'd never seen this before and I wasn't charged anything because they didn't find anything. Eventually had to change a fan relay and that helped a little, but it's doing it again. Any thoughts out there regarding a chip problem? Truck is a 2000 Quad with 92K miles.
