2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4.7L 45RFE NV242 3.92 (AWD) 130K Miles

My wife comes home the other night and says, "Truck's making strange noises." I start it up, no oil pressure at idle, knocking like a railroad crossing. Bummer. Engine is toast.

The fine folks at Dodge want a gazillion bucks for a new 4.7L. Even the normal places providing rebuilt engines want both testicles! Looks like I can get a rebuilt 5.9L and a rebuilt 46RE HD auto tranny, for about what the 4.7L engine alone will cost.

Given this 5.9L/46RE combination was available in my model year anyway (and with the NV242 AWD transfer case I have), how involved is this swap? What additional parts would be needed? Has anybody done this?

With 130K miles I'd just as soon replace the tranny anyway if I'm putting in a new engine. And it looks like the 5.9L/46RE combination could be a lot cheaper. Plus there are all those performance parts for the 5.9L.

Well from what I know of course the tranny's don't swap (as you already know) and the entire engine controls would not be compatable. The 4.7 has coil on plugs completely controlled by the PCM plus entirely different sensors I'm sure for crank/cam position, etc.

I wonder what CAUSED the failure. That IS a bummer.

Try to contact Duner. I think he hangs at the other DOdgeTrucks.org or whatever it is. I know he got a shortblock 4.7 (from Cali I think) for a good price when he blew his bottom end running his turbo (with the waste gate stuck!) It didn't like the 30PSI but at least that 4.7 got him home.

Sounds like another oil pump failure! It's starting to become more common as these engines rack up the miles. I'm considering replaceing mine just as a precaution.

I don't think converting will be cost effective, plus you'll be dumping the fairly bullet proof 45rfe trany for the crappy 46RE HD trany. To do a swap like that you would want a donor vehicle just so you can make sure you get everything you need. You may just be better off scanning ebay for a good used one. I've seen them going with less than 20K miles for about $1K or less. Shipping is usually about $300.. The same engine was used in the vans, Rams, Durangos & Jeeps so you shouldn't have a hard time finding one.

Gotta be honest. Sometimes reading these forums
can be a little frustrating as people want to
pontificate on what THEY think the questioner
should do, in their opinion, and completely ignore
the question. Or, worse yet, someone who doesn't
know how to answer the question chimes in with
wrong info. PLEASE do not waste my time with these
type of responses.

Here's what I have:

A pair of 2001 Durango's. Durango A is a 4.7 litre
in great shape, except for the engine and tranny.
Durango B is a 5.9 litre with a recent new engine
and a good tranny, which is otherwise trashed.
This engine and tranny is going into car A.
Period. If you could please tell me
what's entailed, not whether or not you think it's
worth it, that would be great. Obviously, the
computer in car A will have to be reflashed unless
I want to swap out the ignition cylinder and door
locks, and my VIN would be wrong at emissions
time.

Where is the separation in the wire harness to
swap out between the 2 cars? Since the exhaust
system on car B really sucks, will the connection
on the back of the cataylist be located in the
same spot and I can use the existing exhaust
system in car A? Do I need to swap the O2 sensors
from the donor car? Anything else I need to know?
Any issues with the differential?

These cars are identical, except for the
drivetrain. They came off the same assembly line a
few months apart. Everything is there. Just tell
me what I need to know, please.

Thanks in advance!
