Message: 2002 4.7 auto. 34,000 miles. SOMETIMES RPM's drop below 500 SOMETIMES when going from reverse to drive and has completely stalled a couple times. Dealer says basically to deal with it because no codes are tripped. Anyone have a TSB or direction I can point my dealer to? Pretty sad that I have to convince them I have a problem when I am the customer and I drive the vehicle, not them.

Message: It's sad that dealership "technicians" can't find anything wrong with a vehicle unless it trips a code.
Seems the only learning they do is how to work their scan tool.

Message: Their, uhhh, "scan tool" as you call it, is the most useful tool available to them as a diagnostic technician, if they know how to properly and fully use all functions of the DRBIII. If you're not happy with the diagnostic skills of your dealership, find another dealer.

Message: throttle body and IAC have been cleaned. TPS checks out OK. steveJ, I couldn't agree more. I contacted Chrysler and so far they have been helpful. They are forcing the dealer to take my car in and contact Chrysler technical support while my truck is there. Boy, there is an idea, call technical support when you can't figure out a problem. It is so sad when you have to go through the run around to get warranty work done. It's not just Chrysler either. It's all makes.

Message: I had a similar problem on my 2000 4.7 auto. It would stall going from drive to reverse. It ended up being the shift cable. They made an adjustment and no problems since.

Message: mopar4u, I have the same problem , but again the
dealership could not find the fix, tried different dealerships and still not fix, now my
warranty is long gone, and still every once and
awhile it tries to stall, did all the tuneups, cleaning of the IAC and still does it when ever
it feels like. *(this trk sure kicks ass when it comes to power , but sometimes tries to stall out just like yours ) So if you get an answer please post , would greatly appreciate it and if I can find anything for you try I will do the same.
thx NEWSOL!!

Message: OK, here is an update as to what is happening. "STAR", chryslers dealer specific technical support has authorized my dealer to check out the purge solenoid and check the tranny filter for cracks. Can anyone enlighten me how these would affect intermitent stalling / low rpms? My dealer sure couldn't tell me.

Message: mopar4u,
Well thanks for the update, as far as how the transfilter could cause this? I'm not 100% sure
but the only thing I could see if the trans filter was cracked, then that would cause slow to little trans fluid pick up and cause the trans to
"slip", or if a piece broke off and is clogging
some kind of fluid port in the shift mechanism.
And as far as the purge solenoid, what it does is
transfer fuel "evaporative fumes" from the fuel tank back to the intake ,but only on certain times
like when at "cruise" or higher speeds and when at low speeds or idle the purge solenoid should be close. what I'm saying is if it is purging at the wrong time it could in a way sufferkate the engine and cause it to starve for air, causing it to try to stall, I not too sure about you , but when my trk was in warr. I had to replace the purge soleniod like two/three times ,cause it kept turning on the check engine light.

Message: I'm pretty sure there is a PCM flash for this. My buddy had it done to his 03 4.7 to cure the reverse to drive stall. It's funny because I have an 03 4.7 as well and haven't had any of those issues.

Message: UPDATE (not really): It's not the purge solenoid. Found a code (YES!) but it was for the cruise control surges i've been having (s$!t). Didn't have time to check the tranny filter because mechanic couldn't find the new clunk in the front end (I just had 4 new ball joints put in a week ago). I did get to talk to the mechanic personally and told him that people have reported that flashing the computer has provided some good results. He said he is going to talk to some other guys in the shop and talk to STAR about it. I'm not getting my hopes up and I'M NOT GIVING UP. I like this truck too much, they will get it fixed.

Message: I bought my '00 4.7 in December 99 and by spring of 2000 was having intermittent stalling problems. I went through the ordeal of repeated trips to the dealer where I got the same answer; no codes = nothing wrong. Long story short: PCM flashed, then PCM replaced, then reflashed resulting in less occurrences of stalling. I got a phone call from an engineer at Chrysler in 2000 saying that they were aware of the problem and had a software fix in the works that had to undergo emissions approval. They never called me back. Warranty is long gone and I still have the occasional stumbling idle. Not to hijack this thread, but the following might be related. My truck has a runaway idle when driving on a bumpy road. Just a washboard dirt road will cause the engine to speed up to maybe 2,000 rpm. It is not a sticking throttle, because it will accelerate from idle to 2,000 without touching the pedal. Applying the brakes will slow the truck but has no effect on rpm when released. Only depressing the clutch for several seconds allows the idle to normalize. I wonder if the aforementioned purge solenoid might cause such an effect.

Message: UPDATE: Got the flash I wanted per DC (and basically a whole new front end). The flash done was DTC P0456 - TSB 18-016-02 Rev A. Not sure what all this means but I sure hope it helps. I wish I knew what TSB 18-016-02 was. I will keep all posted if I have any more problems with stalling.

Message: My 4.7 showed a check engine light that was for cam sensor. I replaced it and the next morning it stalled while cold with no stumble, it was like I turned the key off. It did it a couple of times but went away when it warmed up. Naturally I figured it was a defective Cam Sensor so I got another manufactured sensor and replaced it. It still does the same thing. Never had this problem before the cam sensor check engine problem.
