Subject: 98 Dakota oil pressure problem
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 98 Dakota 4X4 w/106k miles. Six months ago, had clogged oil pickup tube, after local garage ran "engine cleaner" through at tuneup. After my "tuneup", oil pressure dropped to zero. Towed truck to Dodge dealer. Dodge dealer replaced oil pump and performed usual checks and cleanings. All was well, until this week. Less than 3k miles on oil change and new pump....oil pressure drops to zero. Changed oil and filter, had great pressure, ran engine for 15 minutes and pressure dropped to zero, again. Quickly shut off engine and let it sit for 5 minutes. Re-started and had great pressure for about 3 or 4 minutes, back to zero. Any ideas?

First, use a real pressure gauge and make sure it's not a gauge problem.

Drop the pan again. If you again have a restricted/blocked pick up screen, fix the real problem before you damage bearings (if you have not already). Clean it out again, then flush the engine 2 or 3 times followed by an oil and filter change each time. Then reconsider your choice of engine oil or the interval you change it.
