Subject: Steering Problem IP: Logged
Message: I just picked up a 2001 Dakota Quad Cab, V8, with about 42K miles. I notice when cornering on a twisty road that the steering will kind of surge back the opposite direction. I will turn in, the steering will feel like it corrects the opposite direction and I keep having to put imput into the wheel. I can even see the steering wheel visibly kind of pulsate the opposite way I turn. This happens when cornering in both directions.
Any thoughts/ideas as to what may be causing this? I had a front end guy look and say all the ball joints are good.
Thanks,
KR

Message: Double check the level of the fluid. If that is
ok then sounds like pump may be going bad.
Good luck and please let us know what you find
out.

Message: Yup. Just topped off the fluid reservoir but the problem is still
there. Someone had mentioned the steering dampner but I'm
not sure exactly how to check that one out.
Thanks,

Message:
Could be front end alignment issue.
-or-
If the pulsing changes with engine speed, I would suspect steering pump.
-or-
If it's a 4x4, and the pulsing changes with vehicle speed, could be front axle CV joint?
