Subject: help on my 93 v8 rebuild options? IP: Logged
Message: MY 93 magnum 318 is coming to its end, things are starting to break down and wearout. Some of the mods that I have done are JBA headers, flow master exhaust, kn extreme filter and a tb spacer, black magic 150 fan.
My truck is mostly used for very long 4x4 trips, so fuel economy is a concern. ( Less cans of gas I need to bring the better, also mean more beer I can bring).
I want to build a motor that good on fuel and still have excellent power.
So I need some help here on what parts I should get:
stay with a 318 or go to a 360
what about a stroker kit
what cam should I use
some stuff I plan on using so far are coated pistons, roller rockers, roller lifters and cam.
Any suggestion for me is very apppreciated.
Thaks

Message: this question seems pretty basic but theres alot you left out.
are you using the factory pcm?
are you staying with the mpi?
what rpm,s are you going to be running?
are you towing,mudding,rock climbing,street and/or race?
these things need to be address before anyone can give you advise on parts or build.
if your looking for a good all around motor,a mild stroker will give you good hp,tq and mpg,
and the kits pistons, rods and crank in the $1200-1500 range,
a good rebuild on your 5.2,heads and intake work port, polish and a good cam will wake it up.
just remember you can,t go nuts on a cam if your
using the factory pcm,it will set codes, this is a area you have to be careful in
call and talk to some of the guys that build mopars,Hensleys Racing,Hughes Engines,Mancini Racing these guys are full of info on do,s and do,nts
sorry for the long post

Message: Thanks for the reply Vern.
Yes I know that I forgot some Info, but here it is.
The pcm I don't know so far I'm staying with stock or I might upgrade it if it's a better way to go for what I want.
I am staying with the MPI.
The rpms i'm looking at idle to about 5000 rpms
The type of driving that I do rock climbing, highway like driving (but the road here are mostly bush roads), and a little bit of towing.
Remember I am building a motor with good mpg and power.

Message: OK,
MP have two cams=
#p5249549,adv dur 260/264,lift.458/.467,
recom springs p5249464
#p5007551,adv dur 272/278,lift .467/482 10 plus HP over RT cam, same springs as above
i,d go with the 1st one for mpg and its power band will start lower for rock climbing and towing[i,d check with other company,s on price and option]
after you choose your cam you can buy the parts and have work done to match your cams power,
heads ported, intake ported[hughes engines.com have and are doing mpi motors]intake runner lenghts, throttle bodys etc
get a 5.9 pcm from a ram this will help in the timing area or a MP pcm, better power and mpg
the more info you have the better your build will be and happier you,ll be with the out come
please don,t go off what i,m telling you for your rebuild,i,m only trying to give you some ideas, these may not be to your liking
go to some web sites, call, tell them your use and driving style, they will help you with/through some of the dicision making
good luck

Message: Couple options. It really is going to come down to money. A stroker kit for a 318 to move it to a 390 will run about $2000-2300. Then you have to get the block pulled, bored and clearanced. If your existing heads are OK you can have them ported and polished. Stock heads are not recommended for a storker. RT heads will run you $1200-1400 for a complete set with valvetrain installed. Rollers will run you $250-500 depending on if you get guideplates and hardened pushrods to go with them. You will also need a cam to go with the 390, and a 360 PCM at minimum. Also, keep in mind that the Mopar PCMs are not recommended for towing, so you will need to stay stock. A 390 would also be happier with a bigger TB, 52mm at minimum.
Other option is to get a junkyard 318 or 360. You can generally find complete engines for less than $1000, and often with some sort of warranty as well. The 360 would be better suited for a 4x4 app since it revs a little slower than a 318 and makes its power lower in the powerband than a 318. You will need some extra stuff to put the 360 in though - 360 PCM, flexplate and external balancer if not included with the donor engine.
