My 2000 Dakota Sport V8 had the MIL light come on today at 121 000 km.
What should I check before taking it to the shop?

Key on off on off on (not start) will set a code in the odometer; after it is displayed it will say pdone. Then you can look the code up to get some idea of what the problem might be. Codes have been listed in several posts on this site if you do a search.
