Subject: 4.7 power question IP: Logged
Message: My first day to view this site. Gotta say its great to see all you dodge fans. My questions are what is the best way to add power to a 4.7 liter. Would cold air intake do it better than a chip? And which brand is better? ALso,has anyone ever ran a stock 4.7 in 1/4 mile, if so post the times. Last but not least, is there a "Best" web site that sells dodge dakota parts at a reasonable price and got alot to choose from? I know i ask alot of questions, but any help is appreciated.

Message: Not trying to give a short answer. I've been reading this for months now. The search feature on the site is very useful. Lots of 1/4 mile times already here. 0-60 as well.
Lots of people are waiting for K&N to finish their version of Cold Air for the 4.7. Don't know if it will work with the new Flowmetric 70mm throttle body though.
Changing the computer will add power, but requires the use of prem. gas. It also hampers you towing ability. An IAT?? adjuster seem to get people about 10HP, and I think you can turn it off or set it back to stock position or something if you want to tow.
I think the jury is waffling on the 4.7 cat-back issue. Definatly don't do it as a fist mod.
If you don't care about your warranty, save your dough and just supercharge it.
Try www.speedtweaks.com ? for shopping. Bernd who posts here a lot owns it I think.

Message: I drive a 2002 Dodge Durango with full time all-wheel drive. Right now I am running it bone stock with the 4.7 liter. I took it to the tracks and was pulling a consistant time set of 16.4 seconds in the 1/4 mile. Speed at the 1/4 was approximately 81.8 mph. Take in mind the Durango weighs in at a little over 4600 pounds. The Dakota would be considerably lighter. You would propably be looking at approximately 15.8 to 16.2, depending on your drivetrain, tires, etc.

Message: wilky, I would have thought a 4.7 manual trans quad would do a little better than that. Maybe it was the tire spin. My 03 4.7 auto quad with LSD, superchips tuner, and a K&N drop in will turn a 15.8 @ 84.4 mph

Message: 03qc sport + yes I'm sure its the tire spin I'm trying to see if I can get a set of slicks to see if that helps some cause the ones I'm running are all terrains. When it rains I have some trouble on take offs. As for the motor it is bone stock. but it does hold it's own on the road I've beaten some very suprized opponents that did'nt expect a "compact truck" with that much power, but I would be lying if I said that I've never lost. Yet I love my truck. It's also a dakota sport

Message: 02 4.7 with 105k on it.
I've taken the time to Dyno at a friends shop recently.
what I can tell is that with a K&N intake system and a gibson cat back dual rear exhaust I've gained 12 at the rear wheels.
Changing to synthentics (AMSOIL)in the engine made NO difference.
Changing to Royal Purple for the Rear Diff and the Transmission added 6hp at the rear wheels. I guess friction plays a part in the drivetrain.
I had a stage two jet chip, which I sold because it impacted my fuel economy by 2mpg. The dyno gave mixed results on two separate runs with the chip but the average was 5hp at the rear wheels. Not enough to justify the cost in fuel. But the change in shift points made getting off the line quicker, but at the cost of midrange power.
I have a bored throttle body from Fastman, although it didn't make a change in the dyno results, I may have once the K&N was added.
Hope this helps.
IMHO
Shorty Headers
Cat back or header back system would be nice if you have the cash.
Intake system
And a real reprogrammer, not a chip.
Best $1100 you will ever spend. Will make a difference. After that a blower or turbo, along with a torque converter change out will be the next step. but thats more like $4000.
