I'm looking at putting in a transgo shift kit into my '97 4x4 318. The shift from 1-2 is really sloppy and that is really what I want to improve, plus I understand they improve the life of the tranny as well. Transgo has 3 different kits, one is really basic, the other two are more performance oriented with options for downshifting and holding gears to any RPM. Anybody out there with any experience with a trasgo kit either good or bad please let me know your thoughts.

Timely post, I was going to ask myself. I had my trannie ( the A518 ) rebuilt for my 93 and they did a OE update build but it is still not a great shift from 1st to 2nd. If I manually hold it then BAM, I am off like a rocket. I am wanting to know other peoples experiences also.

please define sloppy. Mine in my 99 w/100K would give a shutter on the 1-2 shift unless I had my foot in it more then like 1/2 throttle. Full throttle shifts were better. I fixed it last weekend simply by adjusting the TV cable.
I do think I'll put a Transgo on, but this was the fix needed. The Transgo will come later and be the icing on the cake :-)

Mine is a short shift. If I stuff the peddle it holds out but not long enough IMO. My TV cable is maxed out, anymore adjust and it searches on the freeway between OD and 3rd gear.

By sloppy I mean when i had it floored last night i could have eaten a sandwhich by the time I went from first to second. Obviously this is only at high rpm's when I really feel it, driving normally the shift is fine, but when the engine's pulling really hard it takes too much time to pick up second.
Also, I've heard of people adjusting their TV cable, and I really have no idea what this is or how to do it and what it will do, any suggestions here would be good as well.
I am planning on taking the entire tranny out of the truck over winter break (when I'm finally done with frickin' finals). The front seal leaks so bad I add a quart of fluid every few weeks or so. While I've got it out I'm going to adjust the bands and hopefully put in a shift kit, depending on what others have to say I suppose. Thanks for the replies.

Green - what little I know about the TV cable, I can tell you that having it maxed out will kill your tranny. This cable does not seem to like being anywhere more then half dozen teeth in either direction from where it should be. I adjusted mine out at first too, and the trans actually hiccuped on me and slipped... scary. I would set it so that it is in the recommended base setting (pop off the clip and line up the cup and the tang as close as possible) and then mark the teeth and play around a few teeth from there but NOT too far.
Kader - it might be a good idea to try the same thing. By your description, there's a lot of overlap I think you are saying? Or slippage? That might mean you have yours adjusted too far inward.
I'm certainly no expert, so take it all with a grain of salt, and do some searches on this site.

I really wouldn't call it slippage (although I do get a little bit of that on hills, think my bands just need tightened). What I am referring to is just overlap I guess, It's just the tranny being itself and shifting like the factory makes em to, nice and smooth because that's what buyers want. I don't, I want a firm shift that doesn't cause me to loose all my RPM's because my tranny is shifting "comfortably". I haven't adjusted the TV cable at all yet, whatever it's at is probably the factory setting.
The question still remains, anyone out there with a transgo shift kit, and if so which one and how well have you liked it?

the shift kit is a good thing I have the transgo the truck shift much faster now (no delay) and its not hard like some people will tell you (it will break you tranny ).It will actually extend its life.

i have a 89 dak with a [a500 trans]transgo kit[reprogramer]
it had three different programs in this kit performance,towing/rv and police/taxi
i went with the RV/towing just because i plow and tow,i did,nt notice a firmer shift because my trans shifted very firm before,but it took care of the over lap,which is a GOOD thing,plus it gives the o/d unit 300% more fluild which is very good since all the gears run threw the o/d unit,both of these help with less heat,another plus
kit also stops/helps torque convertor drain back[when setting overnite]
i decided against the manual down shift at any speed because i did,nt want myself or someone else down shifting into first by accident at 60mph
my kit had a transitor for the o/d i think!which i did,nt use because you have to dissemble the trans to put it in
i,ve had it in about a yr now and like it,it,s pretty easy to install,just take your time,read everything and be CAREFUL OF DIRT
