Ok guys, I ahve read ALOT of posts on fipk's but they all miss 1 important thing, HEAT. I live in AZ and it gets friggin hot in the summer here and I am afraid that the open air kit will reduce HP. The only kit I can find is K$N FIPK 57-1501. And suggestions would be great. Also, if anyone has come up with another kit that offers cold air or a home brew I would love pics and part#'s

I dropped a K&N filter into the stock airbox on my 92. I then bought a junkyard airbox and snorkel, cut off the rectangular section on the junked one. Once I relocate the battery to the bed I will cut a hole on the side of the radiator identical to the stock location on the other side. Attach the box to the airbox and out the snorkel. That will give me two tubes direct to the filter.

In the meantime you can remove the plastic plate in front of the stock snorkel, as it does restrict airflow. Located behind the grill. It just snaps out.

I was thinking about removing that but wont water get in? When it rains I do like to romp in the mud. and when it rains here in AZ, it rains like madness. Let me know if you have had any problems with water getting in the pipe.

OK, I removed the plastic peice and HOLY CRAP BATMAN!!!!!!!!! Much more throttle response. I just beat a Chevy Z28 light to light. Not to bad for a 4X4. Now if anyone can tell me about water issues????? if any?

No problems from removing the "bug deflector". Gravity, and the ridged factory intake tube prevents any water from reaching the air cleaner. I had a '92 5.2 RC for 8 1/2 years with that mod; no sweat. The cold air is a major plus. I dare to say that a stock air cleaner with a K&N drop-in and the plastic plate removed would outperform a FIPK in a hot engine bay. Put your effort into a dual snorkel like Sneezer's.

I just got back from driving around and I am still amazed at the throttle response. Sneezer, I would love to see pics of yours man. I am taking my truck to a fab shop this saturday and we are going to devise a plan and parts list for my SAS which will happen soon. Also, any thoughts on a mandrel bent tube inplace of the stock tube for air intake? I would think that besides the reduced heat from an aluminum pipe, the smoothness would improve flow!!!!!

The grille does not have to come off. It is just clipped in. I pulled mine off in about 15min. Never had any water problems either.

A mandrel aluminum system would work pretty good, but it would have to be custom made. You might be able to get by with making a PVC pipe system as well. I wanted to keep it looking mostly stock as if it came from the factory, and it was much cheaper to get a 2nd airhat and snorkel from a junkyard.

I've thought of dryer tubing from the hardware store on my 92. The nicer hoses are smooth and it bends quite well.
