Subject: Blown B-pan Gasket, TIPS please IP: Logged
Message: How can i tell that the b-pan is blown? Chris was kind enough to tell me how to check on my other post, but it kinda confused me.
Also, if it is bad, what all do i have to do to replace it? Do i just have to take off the intake manifold?
Any suggestions and tips would be apreciated, i am low on cash, and do not have the time or money to take it to the shop, but it needs to be fixed.

Message: Inspect the throttle body. If you find traces of engine oil in the base of the throttle body or in the intake (shine a flashlight through throttle body), most likely your intake gasket is blown.
Not a difficult repair, but can be time consuming. Get a Haynes manual or similar guide to show you how.

Message: I did a lil reading and found that a lot of recomendations for the M1 intake manifold. Should i go with this seeing how the 5.2L is supercharged #9?
Should i just switch that out along with the gasket? Is the bellpan gasket the same as the intake manifold?
Also, where is a good place the buy the M1? socaldakota seems kinda pricey

Message: The M1 doesn't have a pan gasket. That's one reason to switch now if you think it is in your future. The manifold gaskets are seperate from the pan gasket.
Look on eBay for a used one. krc just had them on sale for $400, but it's over now.

Message: That is not the intake you want unless you are running a 4bbl carb on you dakota. That intake is for carb use on magnum motors. If you wanted a nonstock manifold tihs is the one you would use
http://www.hughesengines.com/general/intakes/magnum_intake.asp
The onel listed under Mopar Performance 2bbl Intake Manifold is what you are looking for. But the single plane manifold isnt reccomended for use with the size cam usually used with injected motors.
The gasket is on the plenum cover on bottom of the intake it is a plate with bolts around the bottom and the gasket usually fails. hughesengines.com has a plenum cover kit designed to fix the problem especially if you are supercharged. The kit is $80.50 and listed on their homepage. Hope this helps you out.

Message: Here's a recommendation I came accross the hard way. If, after reassembly, while you are refilling the coolant, you notice that you are having to add more coolant than expected, DO NOT continue to add coolant unless you expect your engine to be lubricated with a mixture of 10W-30 and ethylene glycol. Stop at this point, drain the mixture of oil, antifreeze and water from your crankcase, repair your mistake, take a break and have another beer.
The camshaft, main bearings, etc will appreciate appropriate quality lubrication.

Message: The manifold will come with instructions from Mopar. Essentially you have to remove the AC compressor, alternator, radiator hose and thermostat, airhat, TB, fuel rail and injectors. You do not need to disconnect the AC compressor, it can simply be moved out of the way. Same with the fuel rail. There is enough play in the line to move it to the side without having to depressurize the system. At least that is the case on my 92. You will also need to remove the accessory bracket on the front of the engine. Once all that is off you can pull the manifold itself. Be prepared to replace the following items:
Vacuum hoses
water pump bypass hose
heater hose nipple
You may need another NPT pipe plug depending on your application and the manifold you get.
The install kit which is extra comes with the various spacers and such that you will need. However, mine only came with a bypass hose nipple, not the one for the heater hose. I was unable to get the old one out of the manifold so I had to run to NAPA to pick one up. Same with the bypass hose. It is a devil to change, so make sure you have one since it is buried behind everything. Also, check the spacers when you put it back together. Some have reported the spacers being a little too tall. As a result the injectors do not seat all the way in. You may also need new o-rings for the injectors, as they may be damaged when you pulled them out of the old bosses. Also, keep the bolts you remove from the alternators, etc in order. Many of the bolts are different lengths, and it is easy to get them mixed up.
Also pick up a new t-stat and gasket. If it is time to do so you might as well replace your coolant hoses while you have everything torn down. Get some thread sealant as well. You will also need a new TB gasket if your old one cannot be reused. And of course a new set of gaskets for the M1 and a gasket scraper to remove all the old gasket material.

Message: It is still esentially the same procedure. You still have to pull everything off in order to remove the intake. A little more involved to remove the heads in order to put new gaskets in for them. I would budget the better part of a weekend to do it all, especially if you have not done anything like this before.

Message: I have never pulled heads of a newer motor, but there are some very important similarities. Make sure you get the torque spec and torque sequence down to a "T". This can ruin your day if not done right. Good luck. I have been following your threads "sicminds" and looks like we have some of the same things going on. I am going to attempt the belly pan gasket this weekend. I don't feel the need to do the head gaskets on my truck yet though. Perhaps once I pull the intake manifold off I will change my mind. I just had my cat. replaced and it made a huge difference in power. Good luck.
