Subject: 5.9,5.2, or 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: Alright I know this has probably been listed before but it's late and I don't feel like searching so here I go. I've test driven a regular cab R/T which was $7000, then I drove a regular cab 5.2L 5spd which was $7000, but I havn't driven a 4.7 5spd yet. They both had about the same mileage. I loved the massive tire smoken torque offered by the R/T but I also like slammin gears. I plan on building the motor to about 350-400hp. What are some opinions. Which truck, motor, tranny combo should I go with?
Thanks.

Message: I wouldn't get the 4.7 if your looking for that much hp, IMO. The lack of aftermarket parts for that engine will make it very hard, and expensive to do. Both the 5.2 and 5.9 are great engines and both have potential, and I am biased torwards the 5.9 as I own one. I agree with you, rowing gears is fun, but if you want to make that nuch power, the transmission won't take it for very long. Not to say that the 46RE in the 5.9 will either, but it seems there are a lot more options to beefing up the 46RE than there are for the NV3500.

Message: Doesn't KRCperformance carry many performance parts for the 4.7L? If I get a 4.7L with a 5 speed I'd like it to be a high rev engine when I'm done with it. What do you think?
Thanks

Message: Yes, KRC does make/sell products for the 4.7, but some products may cost more for the 4.7 because of lack of competition. It sounds like money isnt an issue if you plan on swapping one of those transmissions in, so I guess any of those engines/transmission combos would work great in your case. 350+hp is very possible with the 4.7, but its going to cost significantly more than building up a 5.2 or 5.9 to those same numbers. If your looking into bracket racing, I would consider the auto, because they are typically more consistant than manuals.

Message: Zach,
I basically don't agree with a lot of what you say about the 4.7
and the manual, and I just deleted the paragraphs that followed this.
Lets go into the 21st Century

Message: The sheer satisfaction of feeling more of that V-8 power reaching the ground may sway you from buying certain "more power" mods in the first place. Have you ever considered that the big bucks you save at the gas pump with a 4.7 will fund a bunch of mods anyway? Or have it both ways: tow a maxed-out R/T to the races behind a 4.7 manual Dak!

Message: Mr. too bad,
Did you buy your Dak for bracket racing? Cause if you did,....
I bought mine for a combination, family SUV- QC with leer cab high bed cover and pass thru windows between; towing vehicle- 4.7, trailer towing; fast truck-v8, manual tranny, tire and handling pack, monroe shocks; Driving pleasure-all the above, and infinity sound, SLT(quiet cab),
Brings a grin every time a drive it, clean clocks on nearly every other vehicle on the road, Sure pisses them off when a QC, cab high shell, truck waxes them!
For those with manual 4.7's, that take them to the track, I think many have consistent times- they're used to driving a manual.

But having to drive one every day, what a bummer
