Subject: 5.2 tune up IP: Logged
Message: I bought my first dakota about a month ago. It is a 99 with 5.2 and a 5 speed. The guy said he ordered it with lowering gearing. Here is my dilema. While looking for a truck I drove another 99 with a 5.2 but it had the automatic. That truck seemed to be MUCH faster. My bosses 97 1500 ram with the 5.2 manual was also a little bit more peppy and it was a ram not a dakota. I cleaned the K&N air filter but what else could be the problem. If it helps any it also tends to have a fluctuating idle when I drive in traffic. It bounces around low rpm ( a difference of a couple hundred RPM). Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. I am not looking for miracle horsepower/torque I just want the truck to have the balls it once did. It is to the point where my buddy's 3.9 v6 with 5 speed can almost beet me on quickness.

Message: I also get a lot of rattling from the exhaust at low rpms. I don't know if it is the catalytic converter or the muffler. Sounds to be from the converter though.

Message: fluctuation is a vacuum leak. Based on my 99, I can about promise that you have a bad seal on the intake belly pan. Look through the throttle body with a flashlight and see if there is oil on the floor of the intake. Also check the sparkplugs for evidence of oil. I'll bet yours crapped out too.
The light throttle couple hundred r's could be a throttle position sensor out of whack; (I had that too). Change it with a Sorenson for about $25.

Message: lol I just bought a 99 5.2L with the 5 speed as well.
Mine has that throttle fluctuation too.
I notice that when I am coasting in traffic and let the clutch out with it in neutral; the throttle does go above and below idle a few hundred RPM once or twice before settling back down at idle.
My last Dakota was a automatic; so I just assumed this was normal. I guess I better look at that TPS sensor.
Your trucks lack of power is probably because it is a recepient of the death flash. The Dodge dealer offered to reflash my ECU with this "death flash" this morning and I was like "um, no thanks". From what I've read; it retards timing to stop knocking and your power noticeably drops after it has been done.
There is a sticker on the ECU which is under the hood on the passenger side. I just read this morning; that the ECU will have a sticker on it and if it has the letters "AA" in bold on it with some numbers; then has not had the death flash, if the letters say "AB", that means it has had the death flash. I'm sure someone else can expand on this alot better than I can.
Good luck

Message: A weak battery can often cause the AIS motor to respond slowly. Even though its a small chance, have the battery tested for voltage and CCA.
