Well......
I have read a mess a threads on the subject and it seems there are as many pros as cons. Both depending on the year and engine. Suggest searching specifics to your engine, probably find some good advice. Personally, I did not find enough convincing evidence that a chip would affect mileage or performance on my '01 5.9 Dak enough to warrant the cost of the chip. But ...not all Daks are created equal.....even if the numbers are the same. Just food for thought...

I have found that with the new model trucks that you could go two ways
first purchase a chip or go to your local performance shop and have them hook it up to one of those performance adjusters (forgot what they are called)
With the new computers in trucks and cars these days bolt ons will only take you so far, you need to have the computer readjust the ratios and such to gain power, performance, and mileage.
i have a buddy who has his own performance shop and he told me that it does make a big difference. The one thing he suggested was to put on CAI and CAT before having the CPU adjust to compensate for the increased flow.
Once a i put on my 70 mm BBK throttle body, that is the next thing i am going to have done.

04 Dakota QC, MBRP Cat, CAI....more to come!

the dakota's are very limited, it's I think 3 choices, MOPAR, HYPERTECH, and now SUPERCHIPS, super chips just released the programmer for the 97-03 4.7's. Even more so are the custom flashes, I think the 00-01 model yr can be flashed, and I think Marty at KRC is now doing 02's, outside that, there's nil as for taking it to a local performance shop and having stuff done. I've had a hypertech on a gm product and quite frankly couldnt tell any performance gains from it, friend of mine has a super chips on his 03 hemi, and wow what a difference it made, and from reading posts over on Dodge Talk, those with the 4.7 that bought a super chips are loving them for every penny they paid! Since you dont list what model yr you have it's hard to say, but I can say that if you have a late 03+ forget it, nobody's got anything out yet DC redone the code if I'm not mistaken and not sure if any company is even working on it yet or not, I know Super Chips worked on the 4.7 for a very long time before finally releasing it within the last couple of weeks.
