odd very odd, checked the oil and there was not any ever on the dip stick, WTF did the shop that re-did my front end f'in drain my oil and not refill it?

or is it possible that when i last switched to 10w30 syn that it got burned up? I have a 99 5.2 supercharged running mobil1 syn filter and oil.

the smoke is white with a blueish tint.

You're burning oil. Why do you find it odd your not showing any on the stick?? That's the site i dread most (4.7 supercharged) hope mine holds up. Probably head gasket but who knows. Have your mechanic look at it and do a leak down test or a compression test. Sorry about your luck man!! CHECK YOUR OIL EVERY TIME YOU GET IN THE TRUCK!!! Keep some in the back seat to top up. You do NOT want to run without oil. You do and kiss your motor goodbye.... hopefully it's not already smoked:(

most likely ur burning oil through the bely pan gasket on the bottom of your intake. common problem on the 5.2 and 5.9s. heres how to check:
1. on the passenger side of the engine, there should be a hose going from your intake, to the pcv valve. take the hose off the pcv valve and stick your finger over the hose.
2. take off the hose on the back of the air intake.
3. with ur finger still over the first hose, if there is suction from the air intake hose then you have a bad belly pan gasket.

I just got the truck out of the shop from getting the front end suspension worked on.

Could it be possible that they could of messed with it, like drained out the oil causing it
to f' somthing up?

Because i was 4quarts low and it only started smoking on my way home from work witch is a 10 mile drive.

What kind of repair cost will i be looking at, best scenario and worst.

Is it safe to be driving the truck as long as i am keeping oil in it?

What a f'in money pit this truck, at least its the best looking one around. lol

thanks for your input.

Yes, that's it. The dealership is out to get you. They must have drained it out. We all know the Dakotas never have oil consumption issues from blown intake belly pan gaskets that leave no visual external evidence.

Try the quick test above posted by Chris.
OR, look for oil deposits/residue in the bottom of your throttle body. Find spots of oil? Belly pan gasket. DIY: less than $75. Dealerships: $375-$475. Jo Blo's Shop: $175-$300.

Ummm. If you were 4 quarts low... Well, I'm not going to say it. You should check your oil at least once a week if not more. If you didn't run it out of oil completely it should be ok. But then again you only had one quart circulating throughout the motor. I guess it would depend on how long you ran it in this condition. I'm quite sure if you ran it for a long time like this it has caused premature wear from oil starvation. If I were you I would check the belly pan gasket like everyone else said. If you do have a s-charger then I am quite sure that is what is causing it to smoke. As long as you keep oil in it it should be ok (I mean hell you ran it on 1 quart of oil how much more damage could you cause unless you run it out). If it is the gasket get it fixed and check your oil!

i drove mine around for a while like that. mine was only 3 qts low tho lol.
about whether it will hurt the truck, this is wut ive heard: the thing you gotta watch out for is that its sucking in more air and leaning the mixture out a bit. this can cause pinging and if bad enough, can blow a hole in a piston.
ive thought about it and figured the o2 would sense the extra oxygen and put more fuel in to compensate. i still got mine fixed asap.

sell it a vehicle is never the same after you run the engine low on oil, nothing but future problems await. Also you run that thing super charged without oil that would only increase the damage. Sorry about that, I can tell you what I am heading down to the garage now and checking my oil.

a easy way to check the belly pan gasket is to shine a flashliht into the throttle body if theres oil in the intake then thats your problem. thats probably it if theres no sign of leaks and there easy to repace and require no special tools

top off your oil ASAP if not already. Check for a blown intake gasket. Fix it if blown. These engines are remarkably well built and reliable. I had a blown intake gasket on mine that sucked oil at an alarming rate. Ran it low many times before I got it fixed. My valve seals are leaking right now, but still running strong. Keep an eye on it for a while and listen for any strange noises. If there was going to be a problem from running that low on oil, you would already know it.
