Subject: Finally removed clutch fan IP: Logged
Message: I finally removed the clutch fan on my 4.7 last weekend. Yesterday I noticed that the engine was running hotter when I got into the downtown area where I was driving in a lot of stop-n-go traffic. When I got to my destination, I got out with the engine running and checked the electic fan. It wasn't running. I turned on the A/C and the fan still didn't turn on. It was a pretty cool day and the temperature gauge was reading above 210 degrees where as it normally never moves from just below 210 degrees. Has anyone else taken their clutch fan off and had this problem? When does the electric fan come on?

Message: you need to add an electric fan if you take the clutch fan off.

Message: the 4.7 comes stock with an electric fan. pcm turns it on at 220. i use a flex-a-lite thermoststic switch to turn it on at about 190,never runs hot during the fall-early spring. i put the clutch fan back in summer.

Message: I removed my belt-driven fan recently and noticed when in stop and go traffic the temp gauge needle goes to the center (no numbers on mine) but the electric fan kicks on and it comes back down to normal. It also comes on every time the A/C clutch engages when the engine is at operating temperature.

Message: Dak Owner 01,
If you're sure about your statement, then why does mine work, in SE Texas, all year long, and the gauge never goes 1/2 way. Huh?,
Rob,
On my 4.7, others as well, if the a/c switch is on, whether or not the compressor is turning, the stock elec. fan should be on.
I have added the 180 degree t-stat, and you know, I think having a manual tranny helps it run cooler also.
If you have some time on your hands, you can add all sorts of reostats, etc. I live in a very hot climate, and never have a problem, towing my sailboat, or otherwise.
My 6 cents.

Message: I took mine off last weekend and I noticed it ran a little hotter, as soon as the gauge hit halfway I could hear the fan kick on and the temp came back down. It is cold right now so I will have to wait for summer to really check it out. 2004 QC 4.7L 4WD

Message: I'm going to have to troubleshoot this problem. Maybe the fan relay is malfunctioning. I wish they'd put it where it's easier to get to. I already ohmed the 40a PDC fuse for the fan and it's OK. Maybe I'd better look into a Flex-a-lite bypass switch.

Message: i`d make sure the stock fan comes on first in case the flex-a-lite fails. on one end my switch is spliced to the hot wire(green)right before the fan. the other off a free power tab in the power control center(you could just run it off the battery). this way the pcm will still kick on the fan if the switch fails, just at a higher temp. i jammed the bulb for the flex-a-lite in the radiator by the upper corner near the upper hose.

Message: I removed my clutch fan on my '00 QC 4.7 4x4 during this past summer. The temp nevers goes above half way and I still have the 195 thermostat. The factory electric fan always brings it back down even on the hottest days even while towing. In trafic it even takes a while for the temperature to start rising enough to kick the fan on. I almost feel like my truck is actually running cooler with out the clutch fan. Maybe it's because I have the factory towing package which comes with heavy duty cooling. Either that or my fan clutch was bad again before I removed it.

Message: Figols,
I too have the 4.7, with a manual, and the HD pack with the tow pack, etc.
I opted for the 180, but agree, it runs cooler without the clutch/fan.
I not sure why some have trouble, or opt for all these controllers, etc. It's dyno proven to add a few ponies, across the board, even if the clutch isn't engaged, it is a rotating mass, another flywheel to accelerate and decellerate, robbing some HP to do so.
I'm told the new 3.7's don't even bother with the belt driven fans.
