Subject: tranny slipping in 1st IP: Logged
Message: Got a 2002 5.9 Quad automatic with a 46RE transmission. 40,000 miles on it. Had tranny fluid, filter, bands adjusted and axle was recently drained. Truck works fine when sitting overnight or left at work for 7-8 hours. After driving 15-20 minutes, tranny clunks as I come to a stop. Then tranny slips in 1st gear as I take off. Its Ok in all other gears when on the highway. Works OK if I drop it in 2nd gear at stop light then shift back into OD as I increase speed. Torque converter??? Truck is still on warranty...

Message: OK, no advice offered, but I thought I'd pass this on in case it happens to anyone else.
My truck was not actually slipping in 1st gear, it was not downshifting properly and was trying to get going in 3rd gear everytime I came to a dead stop. The dealer's tranny guy & service manager were stumped and ended up overhauling my whole tranny including torque converter. It was still on waranty...my beast is back, growling like new.
