Subject: 4.7L oil pump failure IP: Logged
Message: These 4.7L engines have now been around long enough to start showing potential common problems. One of which is the oil pump failure. Looking in the achives there is already a hand full of posts about it here AND I'm told by my friend at the Dodge dealership that they do a hand full of engine replacements due to oil pump failure. Most are over 100K, but a few are showing up at around 70K miles. Some due to the "common sludgeing" that plugs the pickup screen and some just plain out fail. Has anyone considered replacing the oil pump as a preventive measure? A few hundred dollars seems a small price to pay compared to a few thousand for an engine. Just a thought. Has anyone actually replaced the oil pump themselves on a 4x4? If so about how long did it take. Like I've said numerous times, I'm determind to make this truck last to 200K!

Message: I cant tell you yet but I am going to be starting on mine tonight. I have a 2001 Dodge dakota quad cab 4X4. It has 138,000 miles on it. Never broke down on me yet. I am having heating problems and this week my Oil pump has quit or it has been off and on but it is making the winning noice at the bottom of engine with all the other symtoms to go with it. for a $105 for the pump it is better to be safe than sorry.

Message: Thanks for the info guys. My 2000 4.7 liter has only 65K on it, and I always use mobil 1 5/30 every 3000-5000k at oil changes. Just want to be pro active and prevent any future issues. Is the oil pan inspection or oil pump replacement a job difficult to do on your own?

Message: my pump failed at 137,500 miles. my 'check gauges' dinger went off, but figured it was too late anyway. ran 4-5 more miles and locked up. I tore the motor apart, and found the pan as clean as a whistle! found rebuilt long block for $2600 ebay, got a few hundred hours into it(want to make sure everything is done right), and not even finished bolting the motor in!

Message: Even with the new Oil tech it is common for sluge to build in the oil pan and should be inspected every 50000 miles. My personal prefrence would be to unbolt the motor and lift it as oppossed to dropping the sup.
This way you avoid the added costs of re-alienment.

Message: I got the 2005 dodge ram 1500 4x4 and a few days ago I noticed that my oil pressure was not building for the first 5-15 seconds of starting and running. I pulled the pan down enough to snake a hand in and found sluge and carbon deposits. I plan on replacing the oil pickup and the windage tray as soon as they arrive in the mail. If that dosent solve the problm looks like a new timing kit and oil pump are going to find a new home.

Message: I have a 2000 Dakota with 226,000 miles Ever since I crossed
the 200,000 mark the truck has turned into a lemon.I have
replaced two power steering pumps, a freeze plug, all the
steering drag links, ball joints, etc... the list goes on... but now I
think my oil pump has gone bad. And it went all at one time, it
never gave me any heads up that it might be going. One day I
have a normal oil pressure for my truck of about 65-70lb. Of
pressure to the next day 30lb of pressure and that only lasted a
few miles before it dropped to 0lb. I thought it was giving a
wrong reading, the motor was sounding fine, until about five
miles later it started pinging so I pulled over and cut the truck
off immediately. I think the motor will be fine, I hope so
anyway. My question is, is there anything else other than the
oil pump that would cause this to happen? And what all do I
need to take off besides the oil pan to get to the oil pump?
What would ya'll recommend me doing? Help please?!! Thank
you...

The truck is getting even with you and you will continue to have problems until you stop the abuse!!

Message: Easiest way to drop the pan on any 4.7 4x4 is to support the
truck as far forward as possible on the frame (the higher the
better) and (while supporting the front diff) pull the front axel
bolts and lower it until it hangs. Then you should be able to get
the pan out with a little room to spare (we have done 4-5 of
these at work with a two post lift, the lift makes it about a 1.5-2
hour process, much quicker than the dodge dealership quotes,
and that's why we get the work)

Message: My 2005 Dakota I start my Dakota and sometime my oil pressure gauges stay and does not register a oil pressure and my check gauges light come on. I restart my vehicle in the oil pressure gauges register a oil pressure reading. Normally does this first start up and the morning. Could this be a sensor are it my oil pump going out?

Message: The big problem with the oil pump on these engines is it's behind the timing chain cover so it is a LOT more difficult to replace - I'm told a minimum of 8 hours. Bad design if you ask me. I've done faithful oil changes with synthetic oil & started having trouble with mine between 80 & 90 thousand miles so it's a inferior part problem in my opinion.

Message: I have a 2002 Ram 1500 4.7L. When I first start the motor, the oil pressure reads normal, as the engine goes to operating temperature the oil pressure falls off when I stop. Upon accelerating again the oil pressure increases. I am ordering a new pressure switch and changing the oil. At every oil change I rinse out the sludge and use a new filter.Besides using a mechanical pressure gauge how can one verify that the pump is working correctly?
