Message: I just got my 2001 Dakota. It's a quad cab 4x4 sport package, with, of course, the 4.7 V8. My only issue is the mileage. Dodge says it should get 14/19 mpg, but i'm getting more like 12/14 mpg. On a full take of gas, only driving hiway miles i barely got 500 km. Is this normal, or is there something seriously wrong with my dakota

Message: I have a 2002 with a 4.7 in it 2wd auto and I pull about 19MPG with it. I have autolites K&N filter, and just changed my coolant last month and put some of the waterwetter in it and I started to pull 19mpg. I also use synthtic oil 10W30 and mobil synthic diff fluid. I did have a surging problem put a pcv valve fixed that. So far the best is 20 mpg on a trip to the UP.

Message: My '00 4.7 auto, part time 4x4, QC got 12mpg highway when new and now at 80K miles gets 15.5mpg highway. I got a consistant 14MPG after it broke in until 10K miles ago when I replaced the stock muffler with a cheap Pace Setter turbo muffler. I've tried different brands of spark plugs, installed a K&N filter, low restriction intake, removed the mechanical fan, adjusted the TPS and a few other things, but the mileage was a consistant 14mpg highway until I replaced the muffler. Most of my miles are highway so I usually can get an accurate mpg average per tank full on a single trip.
2wd, 4x4, auto, manual, rc, cc, qc, full time or part time 4wd, rear end ratio all affect your mileage. That's why you'll see so many different mpg averages listed on these boards. My window sticker said 19mpg. I think Dodge tested the engine on a stand to get that out of it.

Message: I believe those are E.P.A.'s estimates, not Dodge's. They tend to be higher than what you'll actually get for all vehicles.

Message: If you will look at the detail on the Monroney Label, you will see a range printed for both city and highway estimates. Often this range is as much as 10mpg.
For example, I just read the label on a '05 Dakota Quad Cab with 3.7L V-6 AutoTrans 2-WD:
"City 16mpg" in large print. 13-19 in smaller print.
"Hwy 22mpg" in large print. 18-26 in smaller print.

Message: Wouldn't hurt to run a bottle of injector cleaner in a half full tank of gas or a couple in a full tank. Some fuel additives can really gum up fuel system components like injectors and such. It's only a few bucks anyway, can't hurt to try.

Message: I've heard that the '05 4.7L engine is supposed to get much better mileage, they've redone the computer on it. Supposedly Dodge is going to be coming out with a Mopar chip to retrofit the older 4.7's. Just a rumour but it came from a senior mechanic from Dodge.

Message: Weight and drivetrain choice greatly affect MPG. A RC 4.7 5-speed weighs 3759 pounds, while a QC 4x4 auto is nearly 4500 pounds.

Message: I have a 2004 4x4, CC, Automatic, 4.7L, 3.55 rear end, and routinely get 15-16 around town and 20+ on the highway.
Because: Unless I'm going faster than 60, I always keep OVERDRIVE turned OFF. With OD turned off, the torque converter locks up at 40MPH, and stays locked up unless I load the engine.
With OD turned on, until 60 or 65MPH, the transmission is continually shifting up and down, hunting for the "best" gearing for the circumstances, based on the programming in the computer.
I live in the Pacific Northwest around Seattle, and there are lots of hills and such in my daily drive.
Overdrove OFF=better MPG.
Easier on the transmission, too.
Try it and see.

Message: I am looking for a Dakota 4x4 4.7 here in Germany. It is very rare. In fact my RAM takes 16-20 litres per 100 km. No fun at 1.60 € (2 USD) per Litre!!!
So why complaining?
