Just bought a 99 r/t from a guy I go to church with that has a little used carlot. I love the power and the truck in general, but it doesn't sound very good at all. He said that when he got it the catalytic converter was almost stopped up so he took it off and beat the insides out. Right now the motor runs great but it has this "hollow rattling" sound coming out of the exhaust. (And a little too quiet) Have any of you had a similar problem?? I've noticed that a lot of you have written about bad converters on these, but I've got too many miles for the dealer to do anything for me. I've been thinking about cutting the converter off and taking it to a muffler shop and having them weld just a pipe in it's place. (I live in Oklahoma...no inspections or emissions laws really) Does anyone know a website that would have a cat converter cheap?? Also, I'm thinking about getting a flowmaster but i have no ideas what the series means. I want one louder than stock but won't wake my neighbors up just driving down the road at night. THANKS!!

Your check engine light will come on due to the fact it needs the cat inorder for the secondary o2 sensor to operate properly. Just go to the dealer and get the right cat is your best bet for fitting properly. Ask them to give you the part for cost plus 10%. That is what dealership employees get the parts for. Good luck.

The setup that I used on my '99 R/T is the Mopar (Positive Performance) Headers Y'd into a single 3.5" pipe and a Flowmaster universal 3.5" tailpipe. I don't have a cat, so I used the Casper Electronics O2 sim. (from Jegs p/n 182-104042 ) to fool the sensor. Installation was pretty easy, just get a welder and a saws-all,oh and band clamps seem to work better than the U-bolt types.
Don't be fooled by cat-back systems out there. After removing the stock exhaust manifolds and the cat and seeing how they really looked, I wondered how it ever ran at all with them on before!

p.s. Without the cat, plan on getting a pretty quiet muffler, because with my Moroso spiral-flow muffler (also from Jegs) I DO wake my neighbors up a night and have heard about it many times.
But I think it sound cool.

Go to a reputable exhaust repair shop and get the cat converter replaced. It should cost you no more than $250, and it will save you lots of future potential headaches.
Also, FYI, the Dodge 5.2 and 5.9 V-8 engines sound awesome with a basic dual exhaust job with no mufflers, and the expense is low.

If you are lucky enough to live in a place with no emmissions laws then whatever you do, don't waste your money on a catalytic converter! The only things that they do are reduce emmissions, suck power, and empty your wallet.
But if for some crazy reason you still feel like throwing away your money, get a high flow 3" cat and run a straight 3" pipe back (no muffler) and bolt it to your stock 3" tailpipe. I ran this setup for a while on my '99 R/T and it gives exactly the sound you describe. But then I trashed the cat and got some headers. Because we don't have emmission laws in Owyhee County, Idaho either.

I never can seem to say it right the first time. When I said "gives exactly the sound you describe" I was referring to the "louder than stock but won't wake my neighbors up just driving down the road at night" sound. Actually, with a cat and no muffler, the idle gets a deep rumble, the part throttle cruising is just enough to turn a few heads, and the full throttle sound is awesome.
But really, it is still better to not have a cat.

Removing a catalytic converter is no problem if you never expect a reputable repair facility to ever diagnose or repair any driveability concerns. These facilities will not even consider diagnosing a check engine lamp if they are aware that your catalytic converter has been illegally modified or removed. No state or local emissions laws are needed for this, the EPA has decided this for us all.

What they don't know won't hurt them, or you. I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble around here.

Anyway, back to your original question Mr. ImaBBaller:
If you are going to remove the cat, you had better plan on doing it yourself, or have a friend do it. Because exhaust shops usually are not able to remove emmissions equipment for legal reasons. Unless you can find someone who own a shop and thinks like me...
Just think, you could pay off a few speeding tickets with the money you save.

JasonB:
I don't know why a shop would check for a cat if they were just scanning a code. If ImaBBaller gets the right O2 fooler, it should be undetectable.

Some failure codes require an inspection and efficiency testing of the catalytic converter as part of a complete and thorough diagnosis.
