Message: It's true, the 45RFE and 5-45RFE are mechanically identical. The only difference is the software programming.

Message: Unfortunately, by the time the 545RFE software made it do the dakotas, the engine controllers changed to NGC (next generation controller) which has the software for both the trans controller and engine controller built into one module. I suppose you could try a trans controller from an 02 grand cherokee but I bet the build configuration would not match and the pcm would not communicate with it resulting in many other problems. It may work, but no one will know without trying it first.

Message: Wow like Info was saying I dont think you want to rewire your truck to run a Ngc controller.I think there would be to much that would not line up. I dont know sounds like a big project. I can only speek for my self but 45&545 is a much better trans.we dont work on them much. Most of it is software problems that can be fixed with a flash.

Message: Yeah. A transmission with NO mechanical logic like other tranny's. All mods only need to be timing (PCM) flashes.
They are tougher than all the past auto's. Anyone having problems should find a dealer (or a tech) who knows what he;s talking about. It's amazing how you go to one dealer and they never heard of something. You go to another and someone knows exactly what you are talking about.
Dealers aren't all the same.
Jason, I'd almost leave yours as is. If mine DIDN'T have the extra .67 ratio my towing would be slightly better. That .75 OD ratio my tranny ever-so-rarely uses is a ~sweet spot~ on the highway. But half the time it either uses 5th or down to 3rd.
Now I'm almost thinking of just going 4.56 gears instead of 4.10's. with 4.10's at 75 would be 2300 RPM's. Going to 4.56's would just bump me to 2560 RPM's which would be a LOT better to run than the 1990RPM's my truck runs now with the 3.55's.
Oh. Here's a great link to a RPM vs gears vs tire size calculator. http://www.drivetrainsuperstores.com/calculate.asp
When using the calculator it is showing for a 1:1 tranny ratio (3rd gear. Multiply the calulated RPM's times .75 for most OD tranny's or .67 for the later 5-45RFE tranny's to get your RPM's in OverDrive.
