Subject: Bounce ????? IP: Logged
Message: 99 Dak Clubcab 318 Automatic 57K Miles No Mods. Purchased Used W/40K miles and always had this Bounce. This Truck is nice but while in drive and from a full stop I get an annoying bounce when I remove pressure from the break and start a forward roll. Yes this also happens in all gears including reverse. It is much more noticeable in cold weather. (Southern California Cold) Already did the break replacement thing with new rotors. New tires cleaned the TBI, IAC and checked the TPS. Complete tune-up with Expensive Champions (11.5MPG) then put in new cheap Autolites to get it back up to 13MPG. Still nothing changed the Bounce. Other than that she goes though the gears nice, burns the back rubber on command and will cruise at 90 all day. Does anyone know what else this could be? If you tell me it’s the Muffler Bearings I will sick the Oil Nazi on you.

Message: I've got a 1997 Extended cab 4x4 with a 318 and the only time I can remember it bouncing around was when the shocks needed replacing. After replacing all 4 shocks it felt rock solid and drove like a new truck. I put on a set of Monroe Sensa-Tracks and they work great.

Message: It could be your shocks, but it could be your back lash on the differential and side gear slop. I would pull off the rear diff cover and disconnect the drive shaft and check you diff back lash. It should be between .002-.005. As for the side gears, tighter the better.

Message: I took off my truck's rear shocks and drove it down to the parts store to get them warrantied because of bad lower bushings. Without the back shocks installed the truck, it rode like a circus wagon, bouncing on stops, takeoffs and every pebble or crack in the road.
If your shocks are bad it could be causing similar problems. Stand on your rear bumper and jump several times to get the truck bouncing. Once you stop jumping the truck should settle after 2-3 bounces if your shocks are OK, if it keeps bouncing they need to be replaced. Same thing goes for checking ou the front shocks.
If you need to replace the shocks, do yourself a favor and get a set of performance shocks. OEM shocks are terrible and even the CarQuest Bruiser shocks I put on my truck are not that good.

Message: Do the shock bounce test that DSW is talking about but, really the truck should stop bouncing after only 1 bounce after you let go of it. If your shocks are bad, it'll be more noticeable when cold. I'd recommend Edelbrock IAS shocks if you want a good ride and excellent control.

Message: Rob C, do you have the Edelbrock IAS shocks, how do they compare to the stockers. I replaced OEM shocks at 60K with Carquests Bruisers, which were better than the old shocks but not what I would consider good shocks. I did the bounce test with new Carquest shocks and it took 2-3 bounces before the truck stopped moving, go figure, but then again they are OEM replacements not performance shocks.
I am looking at replacing the Carquests with something else to smooth out the ride, especially on bumpy freeways where the expansion joints cause the trucks rear end to studder or hop, seems that at 65-70 the shocks and expansion joints get in time and make for a real rough ride. Do the Edelbrocks have this problem?

Message: Yes, I have the Edelbrock IAS shocks. They were a vast improvement over the stock shocks. I especially like the improvement in control over uneven surfaces while turning. The IAS adjust to the road conditions as advertised. They're never harsh over pot holes or bumps yet, they keep the suspension under control. DSW, I don't remember driving over any expansion joints so, I can't really answer your question.

Message: RobC, expansion joints on a concrete freeway are the cracks between the 20-30' concrete slabs. Seems that the concrete freeways in Vegas have a lot of buckling, the ends of the slabs are higher than the center, causing the truck's rear end to shudder or hop. Cars seem to ride on this irregular surface OK, but truck's have a problem with an unloaded bed. Put 300-400# in the back of my truck and it rides OK, but this is definately not the solution.

Message: Thanks for all the sincere responses. It is not a chassis bounce. Shocks are good to go. It is hard to explain. The bounce is a more forward and back type of phenomenon. I can only feel it while at full stops to fully removing my foot from the break. That is why I thought is might be the break but that has been eliminated. I have determined that the bounce is coming from the engine or transmission and can only be felt at speeds below 3MPH with foot on the break. It's not the antilock system either. It's as if every time I come to a stop, a little man under the hood removes one of the spark plug wires then replace it when I go to look for the problem. All wires tested good with no arching. Rotor and cap was replaced during a full tune up. Like to solve this problem without having to kill any little men.

Message: We had the same problem, it actually seemed like a slipping or something. Usually when getting off the freeway after a high rate of speed, coming to a full stop and then removing foot from brake and accelerating again. Sound familiar? Dodge said we were crazy etc.. It only stopped after we replaced tires (due to wear) and got new brake rotors, our factory rotors were warped. Don't know if that was cause or not because rotors were in front and the slipping really seemed to come from rear but we no longer have the problem, but we had that "bounce" for 3+ years. We have not replaced shocks at all.Hope that helps

It sounds to me like your back breaks are sticking or grabbing. You might have them checked. This is common on drum breaks when the break pads are worn.

Message: Mine shook at idle just before the torque converter took a crap. Ran fine at 2000-7000 RPM.It would shake like there was only one bolt holding the converter to the crank at idle (750 RPM ) . It would pull strong up to the shift point. Then one day..BOOM

Message: Sue, I think there's a TSB on your problem for a transmission "bump" that happens after you come to a stop and then lift off the brake. I can't seem to find it though, I just don't remember where I saw it. I'll keep trying though.
DSW, we don't have the expansion joint problem here, it's as if the concrete is one long slab that goes on for miles. I thought you were refering to the expansion joints on bridges. I think the problem you're describing is more a function of your rear springs being stiff enough to haul a load. Most cars aren't designed to haul heavy loads so the springs are designed to handle no more than 300-400 lbs of additional payload.
