Subject: TCM transfer or Transmission? IP: Logged
Message:
Went to the dealer, I like this place they let me in the bay, the Mech. told me some tricks to look for, and they charge by the real book, not their own book. I got the answer to why I could not shift into 4WD hi/lo from 2WD. I have a fried TCM, noted on the repair sheet as Transfer Control Module.
Okay so I found the TCM under the dash (no small task), I see it, I even know how to remove it. Now why is it that every salvage yard in NY has no clue what I am talking about. And is it a Transfer Control Module or a Transmission control Module?
This is nuts, I am heading to VT for fun in the snow, and it will be real fun if I cannot get my 4WD to function and I am sideways looking at a moose from the side window.
I need to do this ASAP winter has cometh, and of course I put this off as long as possible.
Thanks

Chapter 8E of the 2001 Dakota service manual explains the Electronic Control Modules on a Dakota.
If you have a 45RFE (or 5-45RFE) there is a Transmission control module (TCM) but it has nothing to do with 4WD operation.
Page 8E-21 describes the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) as the following:
...a microprocessor-based assembly , controlling the 4X4 transfer case shift functions via actuation of a shift motor....
This is likely what the repair sheet was referring to.
I hope this helps.
