Subject: intake gaskets - help

Message:
So many choices... I am replacing my kegger with another, and I need to order new manifold to engine gaskets and a t-stat gasket, (I have a TB gasket already). I was looking at the Felpro ones at Autozone, but then I stumbled onto finding that Mopar makes a complete install kit. I can't seem to find what all is in the kit though to decide if it's worth it. Does it have all gaskets, studs, etc.?

Also, since I need to pull the injector rails out, I imagine I should order some o-rngs just in case? Or, maybe this is the time to go to the Ford injectors? I saw a site selling some "take offs" from Mustangs, but I don't know which fit my 99 318? I think 19#, but I don't know what model number for correct resistance and connector.

Please hep me cuz I feel dumbq :-)

Thanks!
Wal

Wal,
Mopar makes a nice kit. It comes with the gaskets and new bolts for the intake. Also get the new belly pan gasket and new bolts for that as well and follow the directions on the installation process to the tee. As for the injectors I dont know.

would anybody know if a blown intake gasket would cause my truck to stutter or seem like its missing? this happens sometimes and not other times..also it has like no power like tryin to do a breakstand and other times it does... so does any body know if a blow intake gasket could cause this kinda problem?

thanks, guys. Hughes has a set of Felpro with no bellypan gasket but has new TTY bolts for $39.

Moparts has the manifold installation kit for $58.50

I can't tell if either kit has the t-stat gasket or TB or anything else.

Which is better - Mopar or Felpro???

Funny you mentioned fiveo, that's where I was looking at those "take-outs" or take-offs or whatever :-)

TNX!
Wal

wal, email bruce @ fiveo. he will make sure you get the right injectors.
IMO, i think i'd get that bellypan gskt from hughes. i have read on here it is much heavier than the stock(mopar) one.

I just got a new plenum gasket and it's much different than the old one. It's thiner and made mostly of metal. I was in a hurry and didn't examine it closely. I don't think any of the metal one are any good. If you are using the Hughes plenum, don't use a gasket, get The Right Stuff from an auto store and use that in place of the gasket. Many people have also used it with the stock plenum.

The newer metal gaskets like you got will last significantly longer. Best option though is the aluminum belly pan kit from Hughes or APS. The reason these gaskets fail is because the stock plate is steel and the intake is aluminum. These two metals expand and contract at different rates due to heat, and it is only a matter of time before the gasket fails. By replacing the plate with an aluminum one you almost completely eliminate the chance of blowing a gasket in the future.

a continued THANKS to the group :-)

N56629 - I wondered about that "stuff", thanks for letting me know it's good. I am eyeing that $80+ chunk of $5. aluminum plate and wondering why I don't make my own... hmm. Now I know how best to seal it to the intake too ;-) Time to warm up some tools and drop in at the aluminum supply house. Thanks!

I think I will order the Fel_pro set with bolts from Hughes for $39., and I will make my own alum pan. I feel as though the seller is likely right that it will never fail after he's sealed it with Orange RTV (he's a great guy and knowledgable), but I want to be sure so I don't have to ever play this game again.

Thank you all!

P.S. N56629 - are you Tel Air Flying Club in MN? :-)

Do you know how much difference there is at even two hundred degrees? The difference in expansion rate is 5.8x10^-6 X degrees X inches. I've heard that arguement before, but it doesn't wash with the facts. I think the gasket material plays a bigger role.

I had a fairly productive weekend. Installed a ported manifold, one of my modified TB's, debadged the whole truck and installed R/T wheels with 275/60/17 tires. I'll have to post the pictures of my install on DakUSA.

Go for it, Wal. It may be worth it if you do it yourself. A person could even make one with tools commonly found around the garage. Use the original pan to layout the bolt hole pattern or use a transfer punch. Then proceed to drill the holes and saw it to size. There's nothing critical other than being careful not to gouge the material near the sealing edges. If you have access to machine shop tools, it's even easier.

Btw, you are very observant even though their information is a bit outdated. It would be the same plane.

cool, I had to ask :-)

Fortunately, I will have the luxury of leaving my truck together while I use the new one as a template for the aluminum pan construction :-)

I really can't wait to see what this thing looks like up close. I must admit that the more I read about it, the more I have to wonder if replacing the pan is a BS scheme to make some $, and that just using the Right Stuff (or better gasket and some Permatex) would cure-all. I found a post from one of the suppliers that talks about dissimiliar heat properties breaking the gasket... dunno about that one. It sounds fishy. I'll hang loose until it arrives and I can take it apart and look at it :-)

Wal... with an aching head now :-P

There is usually some truth in most of these theories. Like I pointed out, there is a difference in the the expansion rate of aluminum and steel, but when you measure the difference between ambient temperature and the temperature that it's exposed to while running, that expansion difference is rather small. It would be important at higher temperatures and if the parts were moving in proximity of each other where maintaining clearances were critical.

Yes, it is a bit of hype, much like the over-used term "billet aluminum." People tend to fall for quasi-technical terms like that.

hehehe, billet :-) Yeah, now that is often BS!!! I run across that on MC parts all the time, as you prolly do with aircraft parts.
