OK, before I start this thread, I had oil pressure when it blew and I had changed the oil less than 5k miles ago.
2001 Dakota Quad / 4.7L auto 67K miles

It happened on my way to work - only got a mile from the house. The engine was still cold. Outside temp about 40. Started fine - no noise. first hill the engine just stopped. The dask lights came on "Check Guages" Duh!

The engine was frozen - locked-up tight. So, after the $50 tow, my mech. called me and said, in a somewhat sarcastic voice, "You ever change the engine oil in this thing 'cause you're going to need a new one."

Needless to say I was shocked! He said the oil looked like sludge coming out of it! I told him it only had 4k miles on it and it was checked a month ago.

Well, to make a long story short, this is going to cost me about $3K before it's all over for the new engine.

After looking at some of the history of the Durango motors, sludge blocking the oil intakes is a big problem! Many motors destroyed due to this.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Need a HO to tow A quad???

I've modded my 4.7 a little, but even stock the thing screams.

The slowest mine has ever towed is down to 70MPH (at the SLOWEST) pulling some heavy quads up to Flagstaff. Where the altitude approaches 7000 feet!

Pulling my Warrior, the Wife's HEAVY a$$ Polaris, and some kids quads along with the entire family and camping gear my 4.7 pulls the hills from Phoenix to Cali at over 80MPH. I've hammered my truck a few times on them grades and hit over 100 MPH to where a family member's Turbo Cummins RAM maxed out in MPH and fell behind!

Them 4.7's tow like a mo fo! Wait till I drop in my 4.10's.

Thanks for all the heart-felt sympathy!

I know what you mean about HEAVY POLARIS. I own a polaris that'll tow this dakota piece of junk with no problem.

I know all vehicles have problems but, this was the first time ANY vehicle has left me stranded -Owned Nissan's, Ford's, Chevy's, Toyota. This was my first and WILL BE MY LAST DODGE.

My dear 'ol '94 Chevy Astro w/ 150K pulled this Dakota crap back to the house to wait for the tow truck.

No offence but, I'll be glad when the Dakota it's fixed so I can dump it!

I heard about the sludging problem when I bought my QC new in '00. The mechanic told me to never use anything but 5w30 and change it often because they were sludging up badly in the Jeeps. I now have 80K miles and I just got done doing the auto-rx engine flush. I change my oil every 3K miles and most of my driving is 70MPH highway for average of 90 miles or more at a time. I didn't see any evidence of sludging, but I wanted to be safe. I did have a valve lash adjuster making some noise which seems to have stopped since my engine flush.

I agree with you though. I will never buy another Dodge EVER! I had good luck with my previous GMC's so I may go back to them once the Dakota blows up(or the new Nissan Titan). I said once before that I feel like an abused wife that can't leave the husband that abuses her! This truck has been a thorn in my side since new, but overall I do like it a lot and every time I go to trade it in on a new GMC I end up changing my mind and keeping the damn thing. I just can't bring my self to dump it! I think I just want to try to get it to go to 200K miles like my GMC's have done. Only the GMC's had NO problems in getting there and still ran like new WAY past 200Kmiles. Go figure! I do love driving my QC. F'in Dodge!

What motor oil were you running in your 4.7? I have to agree with Figols on the 5W-30 as I work at a dealer and Chrysler recommends nothing but 5W-30 in all the .7 motors (2.7,3.7,4.7,5.7)and 5W-20 on certain 2005's.

All I use on my 4.7L is Mobil One 10W30 and a Mobil One oil filter. I have a slight tick in the moring though. Other than that no sludge.

John,

Do you do your oil changes, or have a jiffy lube type of place do it?

If you do your own, with filter and 6 quarts, then never mind this post.

Many of the lube places set their little gun thingy on 5 quarts, and use cheaper oil, that comes out of 55 gallon drums.

I've used mobil 1, 10-30 usually, ever since the first change at 3K, about 65K now, no ticking ever! I change it every 5-7K.

I hope you changed your own, and 6qts, and sorry about your dak, I Love mine, fast as hell, buts thats another post.

Gizmodog - that ticking could have something to do with you running the wrong weight oil. 5w30 is recomended.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

too bad it's not an 02, why don't you go to the dealer anyways, talk to a service writer, the dealership gm or owner, then call dodge if needbe. i have had good luck being persistant. just keep mentioning something about loyalty and customer service in every other sentence, buzz words dealers like to hear. seriously call dodge, you might get lucky.

i have a 2001 4.7 cc dakota with 140,000 and this sh!t happened to me i had an oil break down and it was like jello coming out and it clogged the oil pump up and cause the pressure to drop. I spent 400 fixing the oil pump and cleaning it out. Three days later the engine blew i can still start it but it knocks louder than sh!t. If i was smarter i would have traded it in within thoughs 3 days...lol. I have a 95 s-10 blazer now and my buddies blazer is 2 years older with the same motor and his has 210,*** miles and still going strong,i love my dakota but i have to say the 4.7 is anything but bulletproof like the dodge people say. I had the guy say...well i havent heard of any problems with the 4.7...there pretty much bulletproof and i said well...mine fuking isn't...lol. Also i checked at a shop and my motor was 5300 installed and 3800 for the motor with 75,000 mile/3 year warrenty whatever comes first and there cant get the 4.7 HO.

So, did you do the oil changes?

If not, how can you be sure that, #1 it was done,
#2 what went in it, #3 if it was 6 quarts, and a new fliter?
