Subject: Leaky Rack and Pinion...Second One! IP: Logged
Message: My rack and pinion is leaking pretty bad on my 2000 4.7 Dak. I've tried the steering fluid with the sealant in it to temporarily stop the leak but it's pretty bad. How hard is it to replace this myself? I'll be working from under the truck with no lift mind you so if it's a huge pain in the arse then I'll go to a dealer. Also, is there an aftermarket rack available or do I need to buy directly from the dealer? I've searched this site but the engine is crap so sorry if this is a redundant post...

Message: go aftermarket- C$230...stay away from dealer- find a good garage and you'll need an alignment after.

Message: It is pretty easy to do on the ground, you will need alignment. Also I found after years of dealership work that a binding steering coupler (the shaft between the column and gear) binds up causing the input shaft to leak. Another trick is to install a small transmission cooler on the return side of the rack. It will help keep the temps down which will help the seals. Lastly keep the fluid changed.
