Subject: Heater Core replacement. Can I do it? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94 Dakota and I am starting to smell antifreeze. I want to replace the heater core but the haynes manual makes it look like a bitch. Anybody replaced theres? What do I have to look foward to? Should I just pay someone else? Thanks for the input.

Message: Slate,
yea, changing the heater core is real PITA. Many shops in my area didn't even want to do it. To get to the heater core, you have to tear out the whole dashboard and trim.
I was in the same boat about a year ago and started smelling anti-freeze in the cab. The slow leak also rotted out the evaporator coil, so the A/C wasn't holding a charge anymore either.
At the time I was working full time and going to school, so taking 2 or 3 days to rip apart the truck wasn't really an option... ended up taking it to the dealer and am glad I did. It costed something crazy like $1200, and most of it was labor. Unfortunately it still leaked after the repair, but they fixed it under warranty :-)
Now all is good... The heat works and the A/C blows cold. Anyways, if you have a lot of time, then this might be a project for you. If you are crunched for time, taking it to a shop might be the way to go. Just my $.02
