Subject: Electric Fan Issues!!!!!!! IP: Logged
Message: Well When my water pump pulley decided to go out and the pulley cme off when I was doing 70 m.p.h. down the road the belt snapped and flung around and the fan + fan clutch went straight throught the radiator. It got about 70 thousands of an inch from hitting I think called the condensor. Wel I put a 16" electric Imperial universal fan on this dakota and notice it runs hotter maybe 10 degrees most when normal driving. Well this fan obviously doesnt cool like my factory fan...but when I sit my truck running for more than ffive whole minutes. The truck will get to about 230 degrees and the engines rpms wil rise in idle. I dont think my fan is cooling the radiator fast enough.
My question is, is there a fan out there that wil help me out. Because I only have 1300 cfm coming out of the electric fan and its just not enoguh. Another issue is If I get a bigger fan I will need to know about clearance issues.
Thanks!
Mike

Message: You can get a complete viper fan kit from socaldakota.com. Works well from what I have heard. The Black Magic 150 is also an option, although some have had problems with it cooling well enough on the V8 in hotter climates. You can also do what I am in the process of doing - adapt a Lincoln Mark VIII fan. These fans pull 4300 cfm at full power. Waiting on my controller to arrive. Whole thing should come in at under $200. A cheaper alternative is a fan off a mid 90s Taurus or Lincoln Town Car. These fans will pull somewhere above 3000cfm, and are dirt cheap at the junkyards. Just need some relays and wiring, or get an integrated controller like I did.

Message: Thanks alot....I will look into that. Im just curious on how that would work but now 1300 cfm sounds like crap. I will try to see about others...I have sometime because we are nearing winter so I need to save some money I just need to make sure I have clearance.

Message: Yo Sneezer, I would love to see some pics of that fan once you get it installed. I have been looking into a electrical fan for some time now. I have a 93 5.2 4x4 and live in Tucson AZ and I need something that will keep me cool and there was a guy in Phoenix that would overheat with the black magic 150. I have found these Lincoln Mark VIII fans on ebay for 55.00 + 12.50 shipping. This fan just might be our savior from the heat.

Message: Get a ford taurus SHO 16" efan, pulls alot of air. And when my truck gets to 220 or so the rpms drop not, they do not go up, because the engine is trying to shut down at that temp.

Message: The 16" universal fan should be enough to keep the 4.7 cool, but you have to mount it correctly. It's pretty common to see an electric fan mounted directly to the radiator core as either a pusher or a puller. This just doesn't work well. It only draws air from under the fan, and nowhere else. That means unless you're moving, you're only using half your radiator.
Start by sealing the factory shroud to the radiator, so air can't be drawn from around the edges. Then mount the electric fan so the blades are half in and half out of the round part of the rear shroud opening. The fan blade diameter should as close to the shroud opening diameter as possible, without hitting anything.
If you do that, I'd almost bet the 16" universal fan will work fine for you.

Message: The viper fans work wonderful, and have no issues cooling both NA and Supercharged 408s...
I have a kit that makes it a near OEM appearing install, and has been tested extensively for durability--- over 3 years of proven vehicle time.
Drove my truck (with the fan kit) from San Diego to Houston Texas for the DRTC national meet-- raced it, then drove home-- nearly 3200 miles-- with the fan on the entire time (AC on, fan is on).
I sell the fans bare, or with the kit-- If you already have a fan, and it's in good working order, I will also take your bare fan + $220 for the wiring kit/bottles/bracketry to make it all work perfectly.

Message: RTDakota....Do you just sell the viper fan? I have already a electric fan unit and Wouldnt I just need to swap out the fan unit or is there more? What all could I reuse from my universal fan kit to use on the viper fan kit????
Thanks!

Message: The viper fan pulls a lot of current. You cannot simply swap one out unless you have the appropriate relays installed. That is one of the biggest problems in installing a viper or lincoln fan. You do not want to skimp on the current or you may start an electrical fire or cause damage to the fan itself.
My control unit is due to arrive this week. I hope to get it installed on Sunday, depending on what other odds and ends I may need. Been looking forward to doing this mod for a while.

Message: I have a 2004 Dakota that I plow with. I never had a problem with over heating before this year. I changed the hoses and the thermostat but it still over heats with the plow on. Without the plow, the truck is fine. I have had two mechanics look at it and one said to replace both the fan clutch and the electric fan and the other said replace just the electric fan. I looked on line and I have seen guys replace both the electric fan and the clutch fan with a bigger electric fan because the clutch fan uses horsepower to work. I have read where somebody used a Ford Taurus electric fan and it worked well. Maybe I should stick with the stock fans. Any opinions?

Message: It could be the sensor that turns the electric fan on. You have to find out what temp. kicks the fan on. Check if the fan is not coming on or coming on to late. If that is ok your radiator is not doing it's job. Plowing should not over heat the motor.
