I am due for a spark plug change and was wondering what is the best plug for my 2002 4.7L. Everyone I have talked to and did some on line research says that the champion platinum plug is best choice. Thanks for the info.

There are a few Champion plug choices for your particular model.

The Double Platinum come with a 5 year, unlimited milage guarantee. Part # 7318

The Platinum Power come with a 3 year,
unlimited milage guarantee. Part # 3318

The Truck Plug, for heavy duty performance, and has a larger electrode. Part # 4071

The Copper Plus is the standard spark plug. Part # 439 (RC12MCC4)

Any of these plugs will work well for you. Don't forget to gap the plugs at .40 thousants.

I use only the NGK #ZFR5F-11 on my 4.7.

Great plugs, .40 tho gap and use a little bit of never-seze on the threads, not overtighten.

I run the Double Platinum in my 2002 Dakota. As far as gas milage is concerned I ownly gained about 1.5 miles a gallon on the highway. No significant gains on city driving. But I like the 5 year guarantee. Personal preferance though.

I have standard Autolite stock numbered plugs in mine. It runs good but is a little more prone to detonation than it was with the stock Champions.

I think I had a poor seal on my throttle body/airbox connection. I fixed it and the detonation has gotten better.

I have an '03 Dokota 4.7 and was thinking about trying the new
Bosch Platinum Ir fusion plugs. They are super pricey at over $9
a piece. Anyone run these? Thanks.

Anyone know why Bosch's don't require gapping. Is gapping a big issue when installing plugs, is it complicated?

There's no magic in the spark plugs. The new fancy plugs with iridium and platinum tips are only designed to last longer, not work better. You can usually get 60K miles, and sometimes 80K miles.

I still use a standard plug (Autolite) in all my vehicles. Yes, I have to change them every 40K miles or so. But I can usually get them on sale for less than $2 each.

there's a disadvantage by using 'longer lasting plugs', problems is when it's time to remove them

even with anti-seize on the threads, a small portion of the threads is sometimes exposed in the combustion chamber where carbon and deposits can build up on them,

when it's time to remove them, that extra material on the plug threads damages the threads in the cylinder head as it passes thru.

just use the regular 'copper plus' in your 4.7l and change them more often, making sure there gapped properly and the groung electrode is centered too.

I've put 360K miles on two Daks ('92 5.2; '01 4.7) using Bosch Platinum +4 4418 plugs. I usually change them at 40K. Besides long life (and consistent performance over the life of the plugs), the main benefits are: smoother idle, easy cold starts, and minor mpg gain.

Hey Gretch, the basic Bosch and the Bosch Platinum Plus require gapping, but the other more expensive/high-tech plugs don't because they fire in what they call an "air gap" I'm about to install the Bosch Platinum +2's in my 2000 R/T. They were $5.00 each but they will last a lot longer than the cheap resistor Champions I'm replacing. Go to Bosch's web page for all the specs.

40K is not long life. That's standard duty cycle of the average copper core plug. You should be able to get at least 60K - and maybe 80K - out of those plugs.

I've talked with experts and people who have experienced the difference and using the stock plug is the recommended plug to use. Personnally i use the Champion plugs, because they are the ones that focus more on MOPAR's. I know many of you have never experienced any problems with Autolite, but I have. Rough Idling I would get a good Injector Cleaner and send it through the system.

I just replaced my factory plugs with set of Bosch Platinum Ir Fusion plugs $9 a pop.
Bosch has a 'Notice the difference or full refund offer'
What I notice is 10% gain in mileage and very smoooth acceleration. This means 10 tanks of gas will pay for the plugs. I think I'm keeping mine.
