Subject: electrical problem, please help!! IP: Logged
Message: Hi. I have an 88 dodge dakota v6 3.9L standard transmission, 2 wheel drive, manual windows/locks.
When I turned the key in an auxillary position, dash lights came on. When I turned it to turn over the engine, all power seizes immedately and a click was heard under the truck as if power was going to the starter but immediately shutting off AND NOW THE TRUCK HAS NO POWER,EVEN WHEN I TURN It BACK OFF/ON. All electrical systems shut off (ex: interior light, dash lights, head lights, radio...). Note that its not a trickle off of power like my battery is running low, its an immediate stop. pleas help i have no idea what this problem is. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Message: Clean your battery termnals. If possible replace the ends, and have you battery checked. It sounds like a problem I have seen before.

Message: Oh boy, Terminals are clean and cables new. HMMM, Pull the lower dash panel and check the igintion switch wiring. You also can use a test light to verify the switches operation. You will see a metal rod running down the column and sometimes it will wear ground wire out. Also check all your grounds. There is some on the lower left side kick panel. being an older truck it may have corroded off. YIkes. I hate these type of problems. I will also call my friend at the dealer I used to work at. Good luck.

Message: Ginger, do you have a fuse-able link in the positive battery cable, or a main fuse. One of those could be bad if you have no power at all to anything. But if I read the post wrongly then let me know and i will try to help. Do you know for sure that the battery is good?

Message: If you have power to the headlights and other things that operate with or without the key, and it is just the starter, then there are a few things it could be. Some of the most common would be:
The starter solenoid
The starter circut fuse
the connection at the solenoid from the battery or from the ignition wire
the neutral safety switch on the transmission.
The ignition switch itself
I need more info to help you further
