Subject: service transmission, please help?

Message:
Hey guys, I have an 2002 quad cab 4x4 4.7, 45rfe with 30,000 miles and I want to get my trans fluid changed.I went to two places, the first place Level 10 transmissions said they would drop the pan, change both filters and put in about 5 to 6 quarts of new fluid. The stealership said they can flush the entire trans including the filters without dropping the pan and replace all of the fuid(16 quarts?) Level 10 does not recommend pressure flushing.I have heard pros and cons on both.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!

A full flush is the way to go. Dropping the pan will not get rid of all your dirty fluid. Of course "Level 10" doesn't reccommend a flush cause they want to rip you and just drop the pan because they probably don't have a trans flush machine. On the 45RFE it is also unnecessary to replace both tranny filters your first service.

Dan,

There truely is pros n& cons on this topic. When you flush it is a great idea. However, you must check with the stealer if they run a cleaning agent thru first. Some dealer only have machines that will replace all the fluid but don't have the capability to run a cleaning agent thru.

Now, after you did the flush. You must drop the pan and change the filter.

This is the only true way to do it complete. Think about this. If you flush, the filter will get clogged. The filter has an almost cloth paperish material. How the heck are you gonna clean that material?

The cons of flushing, is that the sludge and crap might get to the valve bodies. However this is a minimal risk. It still can occure, the only way this will happen, is, if your filter gets clogged during the flush.
