Subject: Alternator ?'s IP: Logged
Message: My 1993 Dakota has the base 90 amp alternator. I want to upgrade. The aftermarket 180+ amp alternators are overkill for me as well as expensive. I can go with the 120 amp factory alternator. But, I would like to go with a 1997+ 136 amp alternator. Will a 1997+ 136 amp alternator bolt up to my engine? Will the wiring be the same?
Also, I recall one time seeing on here that after a certain year the alternator pulley became smaller therefore turning the alternator faster. Does anyone know when that changed?
Thanks,
Luke

Message: Any alternator up to 1998 will be a direct bolt on. After 98 they changed the electrical connection from a screw type to an integrated connector. It will still fit but you will need to mod your wiring to get it to work. The 136amp alt was an option on all the V8 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Rams. They will work as well.
The smaller pulley was used on GenIII Dakotas - 97+.

Message: The wiring mod you need is a heavier output wire to handle the extra amperage.
