Subject: has anybody had this happen to them? IP: Logged
Message: Hello all.... I live in the great state of Pa. We have the worst road system in the country. Anyway, Last weekend I took my family on a weekend trip to Deep Creek, Maryland. One my way down we had to travel alot of hilly & winding roads. (go figure) Encountered a long uphill grade fairly steep for about a mile, mile and a half maybe. The truck started out fine but gradually started to bog down to where is really started to worry me, I mean the trans would not kick down. I gave it more gas and it finally did kick down but, I had to tramp it to do so. I mean half throttle and the truck was slowing so bad and would not kick down into passing gear. And when it did it would not shift back out, it would stay there until I reached the top. I mean, the truck was screaming. When we finaly did reach camp I had ask my brother(who has a durango) and my father (300m) if they had any problems like I had exprienced. They had said no. Just wondering if any one has had this happen?

Message: Sounds like 1 of 3 things:
Failing Cat.: Go and tap on all 3 of your cat and if you hear anything loose, you probably have a pluged up cat. Use a small hammer to do this, don't pound on them too hard.
Failing Torque Convetor / Transmission: During acceleration did you notice the car vibrated like an out of round tire? If, you did this could be your problem. The easist way to diagnose this problem is to change your trans filter and fluid. If, the problem goes away. Then your set. If, the problem comes back, then get ready for an expensive repair.
Pluged up air filter: This could cause loss of power

Message: Something similar to that happened to me while visiting the smokey mountains. I just took the truck out of overdrive and put it into 3rd gear while traveling the mountains. No problem after I manually shifted to 3rd...........

Message: Sounds like normal to me. It's a completely electronic transmission and a lot of perameters are taken in to account before the transmission shifts gears. I live in NY and we have a lot of hils here also. Since new I've noticed the exact same thing with my '00 4.7L QC when climbing a steep him loaded down with cargo or pulling a trailer. Empty truck with me just driving it only does it on the steepest of hills. I've found that it isn't neccesary for the truck to "scream" to get the power up the hill. I usually let the trucks torque pull it up the hill and eventually it will down shift on it's own. Turning off OD seems to make it not go through this process. My guess is if you were going camping with the family you probably had some weight between the gear and family which on the steep hills will slow our heavy trucks down. I don't think the high rpms at kick down hurts anything because these are high reving engines and once it downshifts(either by me mashing the pedal down or allowing the TCM to do it's own work)it accelerates even with a loaded car trailer in tow. In some cases when towing a heavy trailer I have manually shifted the tranny up steep hills just to make it easier to keep a safe steady speed.
If it starts to happen more often, you may want to check your TPS. These trannys seem to be sensitive to a failing TPS. My truck used to jump out of lock up on its own while cruising down the highway. I checked the voltage on the TPS and found that there was a slight change in voltage right in that throttle position. The truck seemed to run smooth and fine otherwise. I changed the TPS and the tranny shifted better than ever and stayed locked uped. I really didn't notice any difference in how the engine ran though bewteen the good and bad snesor.

Message: I live in Colorado and drive through the mountains every day. I have an '02 QC 4.7 AWD. I experienced the same thing you described going uphill - with the overdrive on, the tranny wouldn't downshift until the RPMs got below about 1200. I have to run with the OD off until I hit a stretch of semi-level road. No problems pulling in 3rd gear. These trucks sure do seem to be in a hurry to get into high gear, though, I guess in a desperate attempt to reach the estimated MPG on the window sticker.

Message: Well. I went out and checked the cats. nothing sounds loose. My air filter is a k&n drop in. I cleaned it about a month before, so thats o.k. I am going back down in the near future and will try with the overdrive off and see if that helps. I did put the pedal to the floor just to get back up to the speed limit and backed off, the truck would quickly downshift and the whole thing would repeat itself. almost sounds like the part of the computer that controls the trans shifting is not paying attention, if you know what I mean.
thanks to all.

Message: One time I was poking up a hill and kicked mine and it went into 2nd and never would shift back out either. it would go to redline and stay in 2nd. I then slowed down to like 35 with my foot OFF of the gas and it stayed in 2nd. I drove a mile or 2 like that and finally let off the gas, put it in neutral, then back into drive and it shifted like normal ever since.
It usually shifts perfect for most situations and I do believe it adjusts to your driving.
I think there just may be a glitch in the program or something. I doubt it is mechanical in the slightest. It's STILL a much better tranny than the previous 4 speed auto by far.

Message: Yes, same problem here as well...I live in Park City, Utah and when coming up the steep stretch of Rt. 80 from Salt Lake City my truck would search for gears constantly...it climbs about 2,500 feet. Finally just turned overdrive off and it runs fine but it really is a pain in the arse when it jumps that high. With overdrive off I can climb up at 90mph + no problem...I have a cat back dual system and intake and noticed it operated much better in the top end so made climbing the canyon effortless.

Message: EXACTLY what happens to mine GraphiteDak, Exactly. Only next time i will try it with the OD-off. You know I come here more than I should for not being a member. Almost everything that happens to these trucks have happened to mine. It helps keep me informed of what to look for and possibly anticipate what might happen. I LOVE this truck. Just right in every aspect for me and my family. I want to join, but money has been tight as of late, going to someday. This site is a source fo a lot of information as well as help for issues we may have. I can't say it enough....
Thanks..........

Message: Like I said. Mine only did it ONCE. Other than that it has functioned BETTER than any other overdrive tranny I have ever had or driven.
I'll be towing 3 or 4 ATV's to the dunes this Friday night. It always tows the trailer great. Heck, I even leave it in OD most of the time because when it needs to mine drops out of OD and stays there without shifting back and forth like older tranny's did.
Now here's something funny I heard the other day. I was in a parts supply house to get parts for work (not auto parts, HVAC parts).
I finally asked who's shiny Dakota that was out there. I thought it was the young guy but it was the older man's. It is a 2003 RC 4.7
I jokingly said I need his wheels (because I scratched mine offroading) but wasn't serious and he happened to be selling them because he was getting new chrome ones. I wasn't really interested other than to start up a Dakota conversation.
So I mentioned my truck and said I'm going to 4.10 gears soon. He was like "my gawd you'll be running 5000 RPM's..." etc. I'm like. No way. I calculated it and of course my 4X4 DOES have taller wheels than his I said I'll be sitting good in OD no problem.
Anyway he mentions when he takes his out of OD on hills his sits at 5000+ RPM's!!!
I'm like "what, err how where???"
I mention weird, same gears and my 3rd gets me to 100 MPH easily!
When he finally mentioned "pulling down the shifter out of OD" it didn't make any sense. He said a tranny mechanic friend told him to "pull it down rather than use the button because it locked it into 3rd."
I had to go but it bothered me thinking about it. That "mechanic friend" really messed him up. He's pulling it into 2nd gear at 65 MPH and keeping it there!!!
Now I notice when I use the button to pull it from OD that it drops to 3rd and LOCKS the torque converter earlier which would be a good thing when towing a HEAVY load.
I think that mechanic friend is a CHEBBY guy who doesn't realize our selectors don't work like a chevy! Chevy's have that "tow/haul" button but you pull them down to go into 3rd ha ha ha!!!!
Now we have a fellow Dakata owner driving up hills in 2nd gear. I may have to find a way to tell him without him being insulted next time I see him.

Message: Yes, I've had similar problems with refusal to downshift and hesitance to upshift after finally downshifting, I reprogrammed my computer and the problem went away. I've also learned to accept the fact that Auto's don't always shift exactly the way you and I think they should, if you want it to shift perfect, get a 5spd.
